I Never Understood Bourbon. Then I Went to Kentucky.

Why are people so obsessed with bourbon? I traveled to Frankfort, Kentucky, the heart of bourbon country, to understand how a frontier whiskey became one of America’s most celebrated traditions.
Along the way, I explored the Kentucky River, toured the historic Buffalo Trace Distillery, learned the complete bourbon-making process from Lisa Wicker at Whiskey Thief Distilling Co., tasted whiskey straight from the barrel, and joined the local bourbon community at Kentucky House of Commons.
What I found went far beyond mash bills, barrel proofs and expensive bottles. In Kentucky, bourbon is connected to the land, generations of American history and (most importantly), the people gathered around the glass.
This is bourbon country from an outsider’s perspective.
