Rough seas. Flaps torn open. Heat shield tiles ripped away. Engines corroding by the hour. That's what's killing Ship 40 right now, before anyone can drag it to shore.
But every one of those wounds is massive data — the exact data SpaceX needs to make Starship Version 3 better than it has ever been.
So what did they find? And why does it decide whether this entire program succeeds?

Right now, the Ship 40 recovery is turning dangerous. The seas are building, winds have climbed to 22 knots out of the southeast — and Normand Ranger is trying to head west-northwest. Straight into it. Two directions fighting each other, and the trip home gets slower by the hour. That's why SpaceX finally couldn't hide the trouble on X. At this rate, Ship 40 may never make it home at all — and that would sting, because it's carrying data SpaceX desperately wants.
Look at what Elon Musk wrote:
"Nonetheless, we were able to obtain close-up photos of critical regions of the heat shield and engines for future upgrades."
The heat shield and the engines? But the cameras already showed us all 360 degrees of that vehicle. So what data is he actually talking about?

It's data about destruction.
Let's start with a story. In World War Two, Allied bombers came home shot to pieces, and engineers mapped every bullet hole to decide where to add more armor. Then a mathematician pointed out they had it backwards. Those planes came home. The holes they were looking at were the survivable wounds. What actually killed a bomber was in the places with no holes — because the planes hit there never came back to be counted.
That's exactly what SpaceX has been doing with the heat shield, on purpose. Over several flights they've deliberately stripped tiles off the windward side in different patterns, changed the pins, changed the adhesives, changed tile sizes by location — then flown the ship and watched what happened. On Flight 11 the belly looked like someone had gone at it with a shotgun. It still came home safely.
Ship 40 is the first bomber to land in one piece and sit still long enough for someone to count every hole by hand.
So let's start with what the photos actually show — and the first one looks rough.

The tiles on the nose and the forward flaps are badly damaged. Torn, peeled back, gouged out. In some shots you can see straight past the tiles to a red layer underneath, which kicked off a small argument online, with a lot of people saying the ship was already rusting.
It isn't rust. That red is the adhesive that sits under the forward flap tiles.
And that detail is genuinely diagnostic. If the glue is still there while the tile is gone, the failure was in the tile itself, not in the bond — two different problems demanding two different fixes. One means you need a stronger tile. The other means you need a better attachment. From a photograph alone, SpaceX can tell which.
