This 150-Year-Old Desk Restoration Had One Big Mistake | Furniture Refinishing

I made one big mistake while restoring this 150-year-old Biedermeier secretary desk—and discovered 100-year-old stamps hidden inside its back.

This was my most ambitious antique furniture restoration yet. I stripped away the old finish, repaired damaged veneer, reinforced broken legs, recreated missing details, and attempted traditional French polishing for the first time. But just three coats into the French polish, I made a mistake that threatened the entire finish. I had to figure out how to recover before continuing through all 21 coats.

I’m a self-taught furniture refinisher, and although I research every project obsessively, some lessons can only be learned by doing. I’m sharing the mistakes alongside the wins because those are often the most useful parts of the process.
