This is one of a series of videos that explores the top 100 most famous works of art. This video is a deep dive into the painting, Women of Algiers in Their Apartment by Eugene Delacroix. It was created after Delacroix took a trip to Morocco and Algiers. It is an example of Orientalism in Art. It was created for the Paris Salon. It depicts the female quarters of a North African home. Delacroix was a master of color and oil painting. He used chiaroscuro and dramatic lighting. He used loose brushstrokes, a change from the dominant style of NeoClassicism. Delacroix studied Art History, and was influenced by the Venetian Renaissance painters Titian and Veronese- and their use of color. He was also influenced by the Brushwork of Rubens. He painted what he saw on his journey to North Africa. There are four figures with social hierarchy- and a heavy dreamlike atmosphere. There are patterns, fabrics, textiles, and a hookah. The painting is mysterious and moody. There is symbolism in the painting. The enclosed room of the harem is both a sanctuary and a prison. It represents imagination and dreams.
