Museum Römervilla - An Ancient Roman Mansion in the Ahr Valley

In 1980, when a new country road was built here near Ahrweiler, the workers discovered remainings of a huge ancient Roman mansion. And this mansion is now on display here in the Museum Römervilla. A very interesting site as we will soon see. And scientists are still working on it and it's one of the most impressive remains of Roman architecture in Germany. So let's have a look inside. Upstairs we first have a look at this model of what this Roman estate might have looked like. It was located some 10 miles west of the Ahrs estuary into the Rhine. Over time the soul adopts the colour of the thoughts. These words of Marc Aurel introduce us to this excavation site. The discovery of this site, for centuries hidden underneath rubble, came as quite a surprise. Originally built as a Villa Rustica, a rural estate, the site was transformed into an inn in late ancient times. Even later it was used as an iron melt, before it decayed and was covered by rubble from the nearby hill. Its size and condition are extraordinary. These wall paintings in particular are quite amazing. And of course the estate had a bath. These mosaics however are from other locations. Apparently the wealthy owner of this mansion was not too fond of them. The exhibition includes artifacts both from this as well as other sites. Considering the fact that all these exhibits have been created long before industrialized times makes this place the more impressive. As Bernard of Chartres said, we stand on the shoulders of giants. So back outdoors with the vineyards behind me. And I have to admit this was really an impressive moment for me to have a look at our history, at our very old history here in the area. And thanks for going there with me and I hope you enjoyed our little excursion. And if you did, then please give the video a thumbs up, subscribe and drop a comment down below. And I hope to see you on the next video. Bye-bye.
