China Hit From Every Direction—Has “2012 Mode” Begun?

Why is China being hit by so many disasters at once? Katherine Hu examines the floods, repeated earthquakes, renewed COVID surge, and mounting pressure surrounding the Three Gorges Dam in the summer of 2026.

On August 7, ferocious winds and record-breaking rainfall swept through Beijing, turning roads into rivers and bringing parts of the capital to a standstill.

That same day, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Yibin, Sichuan—following dozens of tremors across the region in recent weeks. For a province that still carries the trauma of the devastating 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the growing seismic activity has raised an urgent question: could these repeated tremors be warning signs of something larger?

But the greatest concern may lie farther downstream.

As torrential rain moved toward the Three Gorges Reservoir system, the dam began releasing floodwater through thirteen spillway outlets. Towns were inundated, vehicles and factories were swept away, and critical transportation infrastructure was damaged.

This investigation also examines claims attributed to a senior figure connected to China Three Gorges Corporation, as well as reported internal scenario maps projecting what could happen if the dam were ever to fail. According to those disclosed projections, as many as 132 million people could be affected within the first week alone. These claims and projections have not been independently verified and are presented as reported source material—not as a prediction that a dam failure will occur.

At the same time, China CDC data shows that the country’s COVID-19 test positivity rate rose from 2.9 percent in early June to 20.3 percent by late July, while videos and witness accounts suggest growing pressure on hospitals in several regions.

Floods. Earthquakes. Public-health pressure. And unanswered questions surrounding the world’s largest water-control project.

Is China simply facing an extraordinary convergence of natural disasters—or is the summer of 2026 exposing vulnerabilities that Beijing has spent years trying to conceal?
