7.16 big changes could be on the horizon for the Head Start early education
program for our youngest learners. Good news, Alex Whitler joins us from the Fox
5 newsroom with more on that. Alex, good morning. Yeah, good morning. I want to
give you just a little more background about the Head Start program. It was
first established in the 19 sixties and its purpose was to serve low income
families and combat childhood poverty from birth to five years old. Now the
Trump administration wants to make changes to that program and the key part
of those changes would include stripping away federal regulations and
rules and putting them in the state's hands. Those regulations impact class
sizes, teacher to student ratios, education requirements and background
checks for staff. Advocates and parents worry taking away federal regulations
will result in some Children getting left behind. I'm a single mother and I
do depend on childcare daycare. A lot of us are dependent on, you know, any kind
of educational assistance that we can get to help raise these kids. It reduces
crime. It includes health care, health options, health outcomes, strengths and
families and fuels our economy. It's the foundation is like when you build a
house, you have to have a strong foundation. That's what we need for the
Children to. They have to have a strong foundation in order for them when they
go to kindergarten and the middle school, high school and college. The
administration insists providers won't have to change a thing if it's working
for them. The public will have 60 days, about two months to weigh in on the
changes before they go into effect, though, and the new rules could also
face legal challenges. Something to watch back. We'll keep an eye on it,
Alex. Thank you for that. Well, U. S. Senate
