Johann Schrammel - "Wien bleibt Wien!" March (1887)

Johann Schrammel (22 May 1850 – 17 June 1893) was an Austrian composer, musician and folk singer. In 1878, together with his brother Josef Schrammel and guitarist Draskovits, he founded a trio called "D'Nußdorfer". In 1879, Draskovits was replaced by Anton Strohmayer. In the same year, the trio became the famous Schrammel Quartet with the addition of clarinetist Georg Dänzer. The quartet gained great popularity with its way of playing folk Viennese music and thus became the founder of the Schrammelmusik named after it.

The march was first published in 1887 by Edition Cranz, often paired with Richard Eilenberg’s Petersburger Schlittenfahrt. It was first performed publicly in August 1886 during a 25th-anniversary celebration of the Schrammel brothers, featuring the Kapelle Philipp Fahrbach and the Hoch- und Deutschmeister under Carl Michael Ziehrer.

Schrammel’s marches are known for their Viennese charm, rhythmic vitality, and brass-driven melodies. Wien bleibt Wien! embodies this style, with a march rhythm, catchy brass themes, and a celebratory mood that reflects the pride of Vienna. It remains a staple in both classical and popular music contexts, performed by orchestras, bands, and ensembles worldwide.
