Russia’s Northern Fleet conducted large-scale live-fire exercises in the Barents Sea on Monday, involving surface ships, a nuclear-powered submarine, coastal missile systems and aircraft. The frigate Admiral Golovko fired a Kalibr cruise missile, the missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov launched a Vulkan cruise missile, the Bastion coastal system fired an Oniks supersonic anti-ship missile, and the nuclear submarine Orel launched three Granit cruise missiles at simulated enemy naval targets. Supporting aircraft included Tu-142, Su-24M, MiG-29K, Tu-22M3 and an Il-78 tanker. The Russian Defence Ministry said all targets were successfully destroyed. The exercise area was closed to civilian shipping and aviation in advance.
