What if I told you that many words you use in Chinese every day were actually invented in Japan?

Words like 電話 diànhuà—telephone, 哲學 zhéxué—philosophy, 科學 kēxué—science, 社會 shèhuì—society, and even 健康 jiànkāng—health all entered modern Chinese through Japanese.

For centuries, Japan borrowed Chinese characters, ideas, laws, and literature. But after the Meiji Restoration, the relationship flipped. Japan modernized rapidly, created elegant new kanji combinations for Western concepts, and China began borrowing those words back.

This is the story of one of history’s greatest linguistic reversals: when China’s student became its teacher and modern Chinese was transformed by Japanese-made vocabulary.
