Reid Ferry on Trident, Propless Mentalism and Why He Showed the Live Performance

Trident has been the thing people keep talking about since Blackpool, which is usually a good sign. Most convention hype dies within a fortnight. This didn't.

I got Reid Ferry on to talk it through properly. If you haven't come across it, the bare bones is this: someone thinks of any object, no restrictions, nothing written down, nothing said out loud. You play a short game of word association, they give you three random words, and you tell them what they were thinking of.

But the bit Reid keeps coming back to, and I agree with him, is that it isn't really a propless trick. It's a system. It's a new way of getting information from someone without them ever committing their thought to paper, which means you can bolt it onto billet work, impression devices, pre-show, all of it. He talks about performing a billet peek without the participant ever writing their word down, which is a genuinely mad sentence when you think about it.

We get into a lot: how Pete Turner fixed it at Blackpool by telling him to take a step away rather than add one, why Reid deliberately did the opposite of every other propless release by putting a full live performance in the trailer, the confirmation bias magicians fall into when they watch it knowing the answer, and the Trident Trainer he built by hand because AI simply couldn't do it.

I've been performing it myself, badly at first, and I talk honestly about that. Including the time I rattled through it with Toby Davis thirty seconds before we went live and didn't get it, purely because I couldn't spell the word.
