I watched a lecture this morning and it's changed my mind, or at least properly challenged it, and I love it when that happens.

Here's my starting position. Meaning in magic has often meant, to me, a slightly awkward metaphor bolted onto a trick that weakens it rather than helps. There are exceptions. Eugene Berger is the obvious one, someone you just watch and you're in it. But it's been few and far between.

Then Perseus Arkomanis. I sat down with Resonance, his lecture video, and by the end I was watching routines I'd normally find myself indifferent to and thinking, no, that landed. Not just beautiful in his poetic way of presenting things, but a genuinely magical experience. There's a moment where I got so caught up I forgot to look for the method, which is when you know it's working.

It's a properly crafted lecture. He comes on to Hendrix, and later calls back to it, and you realise the whole thing has been built with an understanding of exactly where you'll start doubting him and what example will answer it. The photograph story alone, about how we used to wait days to get pictures back and it felt like mystery, does more work than most theory chapters.

It's forced me to ask an honest question. I've long told myself I do straightforward trick-after-trick close-up because that's what the situation wants, and often it is. As Perseus says, some magic is fast food and there's nothing wrong with that. But am I sure that's what people want, or is it just what the environment allows?

Four or five tricks in there, all of which I could imagine performing. The straw trick in particular, I want to do that.

It's around twenty quid for close to two hours. If you've ever looked at this kind of material and thought it isn't for you, that's exactly what I thought, and I was wrong.

His books Tiles and Mosaic are also on there, and worth your time. Medusa is stunning too.
