Why was a $2 billion floating crane abandoned before it ever got the chance to work?

This is the story of Orion, one of the most advanced heavy-lift vessels ever built, and the catastrophic overload test that nearly destroyed its future. Built for the offshore wind industry and equipped with Liebherr’s massive HLC 295000 crane, Orion was designed to lift enormous wind turbine foundations that older vessels could no longer handle.

But during a test in 2020, the crane failed at less than half the intended load. The hook snapped, the boom collapsed backward, and the machine that was supposed to change offshore engineering was left broken in a German shipyard for nearly two years.

In this video, we break down what really happened to Orion, why the floating crane was abandoned, how the failure exposed the limits of extreme engineering, and how this massive vessel eventually returned to become one of the most important machines in offshore wind construction.
