AI GeneratedVarious sailing teams reflect on their performances during a competitive weekend in Portsmouth. While some celebrate victories and consistent finals appearances, others grapple with boat handling errors, tactical mistakes, and the high level of competition. Despite varying results, there is a collective focus on team cohesion, systematic improvement, and the pursuit of consistency.
Yeah, it feels like we were gelling as a team in every aspect and it felt very nice, to be honest, around the course.
We didn't do super nice starts but with the recoveries we could make it was very nice overall.
Yeah, it's been a bit of a weird season with getting all the finals but at the same time having two zeros on the board.
We've sailed so well in the ones we've been able to sail and we're really happy with how we're doing,
we're really happy with how we're working as a team, how we're really pushing to improve each event
and I think that's resulting in some good results for us lately so we'll try to keep it going.
I think yesterday the starts were giving us a bit of a headache.
We really made a new plan today and got it together on that front and then just unfortunately,
the second one was a bit tricky with the Swiss and we were so close to each other going around that reach mark
and just a boat handling error from us meant that race was done and then the first race,
just too many mistakes approaching in particular those bottom marks.
Yeah, some fantastic racing across the weekend.
I think contrary to some of the social media, the B-Fleet was significantly harder with the level much higher than the A-Fleet.
There was plenty of ongoing in that but I think personally from our side, we're obviously very disappointed with the result.
After yesterday, it felt as though we needed to get some good starts which we delivered on
and then it unravelled from there which is quite unusual for ourselves.
At this point, we need to look back at it and just be disappointed.
Yeah, it's another great weekend for our team.
We said we've got to start working on our consistency and to get two finals in a row now in two seconds is really pleasing.
The final could have gone either way. We had the lead, we had a really good start
and it's always tough when you get the choice of which top mark you want to take and the boat behind goes the other one and passes you.
It's a little tough but the fact that we're in the mix and we're doing all the basic things really well, it's really good.
Yeah, it was tricky. It got quite dynamic on the race course with the wind going a bit back and forth
and changing what obstacles you had around there but it was fun.
Oh, it was good. It was good. I think making the finals in these split fleets is no mean feat.
We ticked that box. We felt like we've been sailing very well all weekend, made that final
and then yeah, it didn't finish exactly the way that we wanted it to but look, we finished third overall.
It's a great result. The whole group was sailing amazingly well. We've got a lot to be proud of there.
Yeah, I think if you told us coming away from this weekend that we would be in the final and be in the fight, we would be really happy with that.
We've been really systematic in the way that we've been approaching everything and improving
so I think overall we're really, really happy with how this weekend went.
I suppose plenty of positives from this weekend and a fair bit of frustration as well.
I really felt like we were sailing the boat really well at times, doing some really good things
but also making a couple too many mistakes and yeah, I think at times overcomplicating the situation as well.
It was quite a shifty, tricky racetrack so yeah, definitely a couple of decisions really looking back on kicking myself
but yeah, all in all, we had plenty of opportunities to get into the final.
Plenty of opportunities to knock Spain out again who ended up going on to win.
Looking at the scoreboard, it was super tight in all the racing and in our group especially
and yeah, we had an opportunity today. Going into that final race, we had an opportunity and we didn't come through.
Yeah, just the execution was off today and yeah, we need to be better in order to make these finals.
Everyone's getting so good. The bar's going up.
Yeah, it wasn't our best event. Obviously, we've got the speed.
There was nothing wrong with that. It's just mistakes and yeah, we showed how quick we can be in the first race today
and then in the last race, we were .01 of a second over and that's it.
That's all that matters. We were early and we had to get behind everyone and then I started taking some risk
and I don't sort of regret doing that but we started taking quite a bit of risk to try to catch up to Canada, New Zealand or Spain
and those risks didn't pay off so yeah.
Yeah, it feels really good. Another victory after Halifax here in Portsmouth on a spectacular weekend
with strong winds and a small wave. We like it a lot. The Grandstand was incredible and yeah, we're moving forward in the season.
Yeah, we're delighted right now to win another event here in Portsmouth and the truth is that we've been sailing very well as a team
and we're very happy with that exactly, having sailed well as a team and getting a good result.
Once again, a place in the final. It's really, really fun and we've been fighting for that all season,
to just keep taking the next step forward and I think it shows that after this weekend that we're a team to count on.
Yeah, it's a super positive weekend for the team to have another final, a second final in a row.
It's something that has never happened to us. I think it shows that we're winning regularly, that we're working well and that we're making a lot of progress.
So, a lot of positives. We had a bitter taste after this final because we really wanted to win.
We left well and then we fell to third place and we tried to attack rather than defend and that cost us third place.
So, we finished fourth in the end. We're disappointed but I think it's a disappointment that we didn't win,
which is really a positive sign because it means that we're getting closer to first place.
Honestly, it's a great weekend. It was very high-range. There was a lot of wind, especially today.
We had opportunities to bring Lee back on board, which we did yesterday and today.
Today, it went really well. It's a very solid day, not yet in what we knew how to do before, but it's getting closer.
Especially Lee is not injured. He has a lot on his shoulders. I think the level of confidence has gone up by almost 100%.
So, it's great and we're taking everything we can.
It was clearly a better day. It was nice to win a race, but we're not blind.
We can see that they pick us up quickly and one more round and New Zealand and Spain would have had us.
It's not because we're here and think we've solved all our problems. We know that there's still a long way to go.
Luckily, we have a lot of data that shows that, so we can see that we're 5-8% behind.
We'll keep chasing that and keep working on it, but for me, it's just sailing time.
Technique and sailing together, especially when we have new people. It takes time to find each other.
If you don't sail 100% all the time in this field with these top teams, even if you have a good start,
you'll get used to it pretty quickly. I'm glad that there were only two laps in the last race today.
It was a difficult weekend for us. Hopefully, it'll be better on Saturday.
The weekend didn't end in a very positive way for us, but there are a lot of small positive things that we've been able to improve on.
We're very proud of that.
We'll try to put the next events into practice, even in regatta, when things are shorter and more restricted.
It's very difficult to be consistent in manoeuvres and speed. We have very little training time.
What we've seen today is that it's a lot of manoeuvres, a lot of cambering all the time.
It's such a small course that we have to keep manoeuvring all the time.
The flotilla and the other boats come together all the time.
It's very intense, even though the wind, with the equipment we had today, was well controlled.
We got close to 95 knots several times today.
We can feel the whole boat vibrating, but it's well under control.
