Two years on from being crowned the best team in Europe, Spain are now officially the world's
number one side. Hundreds of thousands of fans joined the players in Madrid to celebrate
their World Cup final victory over Argentina. A win that extended their unbeaten run to
38 matches, an all-time record in men's international football.
We played against the best national teams there are and yet we finished on top. This
kind of team is built with good people, supportive people who hold values and principles that
prioritise the common good over individual interests.
King Felipe gave the win a royal seal of approval. It wasn't all plain sailing for Spain at the
tournament. It began with the team under fire and under pressure following a 0-0 draw against
World Cup debutant Cape Verde.
We started a little bit sloppy in the first games but step by step we are improving. I
think these last two games we played amazing football. We dominated both games, we created
a lot of chances, we controlled the game, we conceded nothing. We deserve this trophy.
19-year-old Lamin Yamal has become the youngest player to win both the European and world
titles. He's yet to lose for his country in 28 competitive matches. Amazingly, he wasn't
even considered the leading teenager in this squad. His Barcelona team-mate Pau Cabassi
was named best young player at the finals. He and Yamal, only the fourth and fifth teenagers
to start a World Cup final and win.
The seeds have been sown for years of future success with this crop of players. And at
the next World Cup in 2030, Spain will have the added advantage of being a co-host of
the finals.
