This is PERFECT… major Calgary Flames prospect update | Calgary Flames News

In a summer that has been full of unreal Calgary Flames prospect updates, we have another absolutely sensational one with the World Junior Summer Showcase starting in just a couple days. Plus, is it too early to talk about the 2027 NHL trade deadline? We're going to get to all that more in this video, but first I want to welcome you to Flames Digest. I'm Mark Griffith. If you're new around here and you love the Flames, make sure to subscribe so you can stay up to date on all the latest news, updates, reports, and rumors revolving around your Calgary Flames. We would love to welcome you to the Flames Digest family, and hey, it's almost every Flames fan's favorite subject. We're talking about the Young Guns, and like I said, the World Junior Summer Showcase is starting in just a couple days, and we have another awesome update here as Team Canada has announced their roster, and there were three Calgary Flames prospects listed, or at least the guys invited, which is super cool. So the World Junior Summer Showcase, it gives us a little glimpse of, you know, some players in the summer. It's almost like a warm-up for the real thing, for the World Junior Championship, obviously, over the holiday season, but in the summer, you get to see some of these guys that you don't get to see all that much, and for Team Canada, like I said, they announced their roster, I guess, or at least the guys invited, and there were three Flames. Of course, who are they? Carson Carls, Cole Reshne, and Chase Harrington, three C names there, well, four if you count Carls as well as Carson, but either way, awesome to see that. So Carls, obviously, just drafted fourth overall, Cole Reshne, our first pick last year, and Harrington recently drafted as well, which is super duper cool that we get to see three Canadians. As pointed out here, Hockey Canada invites three Flames prospects to the World Junior Summer Showcase, running between July 26th and August 1st, right, kind of in that middle of summer there, which is great to see, so starts in just a couple days, cannot wait to absolutely see that, and Calgary will actually have eight prospects attending the showcase this year in Windsor, as we just saw, Carls, Reshne, and Harrington for Team Canada. Theo Stok Salius, I believe it's actually his birthday today, but he was the first one announced, I believe, obviously representing Team Sweden, and then four Americans, and Cullen Potter, Phillips, Wittenbach, and Hextall as well, newly acquired there, so super cool, obviously a bunch of first-rounders in there, guys drafted pretty early on, yeah, Wittenbach as well, remember when it was Wittenbach Digest a few months ago, when we were in, like, Hobie Baker season, kind of towards the end of the NCAA season as well, and in the playoffs, super excited to see all these guys play, it'll honestly be very, very cool to have just so many Flames competing in this tournament, getting to see some of our guys play in, you know, actual competitive hockey, there was obviously the training camp taking place at Winsport a few weeks ago, and that was more so just kind of like practice, scrimmaging, you know, just skills, I guess, more than anything, drills, and this'll be a more competitive environment, so our first time getting to see some of these guys play in an actual competitive, you know, tournament, I suppose, since being drafted, obviously, I'm thinking more about Carl's than anyone else there, but still stoked to have all these guys, and Ryan Pike here points out, well, he was actually answering a question of who's missing that maybe should have been invited to one of the teams, Ryan Pike says the Flames have 15 players in the eligible group, eight are headed to the Summer Showcase, and Tobias Trabals on the Czech Summer Junior roster, which isn't part of the Summer Showcase, I believe, he also says I'd keep my eye on Czechia's Simon Katalitsky as a dark horse headed to Sarnia, highly regarded, but had a rough draft year, and we're stoked to obviously have Katalitsky in the pipeline, another great one, as Ryan Pike points out here, a rough draft year, but a lot of people thought he dropped quite a bit in this most recent draft as well, so another very, very premier prospect to have in the pipeline, no complaints there, but I'm assuming if Czechia was involved in this, obviously we'd have Trabal, and then maybe Katalitsky as well, not 100% sure on that, Ryan Pike also points out, for prospect context, the Flames define their developmental group as being 25 players, I thought he just said 15, but I guess it's 25, but he says eight out of which will be at the World Junior Summer Showcase, with the ninth Czechia Summer Junior team, who we of course just saw, but either way, whether it's 15 or 25, that's still high percentages of Flames being called to represent their countries over this little tournament for the summer, and obviously it's kind of a meaningless tournament, it's not like you're gonna brag about winning for the rest of your life the way you would about, you know, the Stanley Cup, well obviously, but maybe the World Juniors, that kind of thing, but you know, it's super cool that we have so many guys being represented, it's just another testament to our scouting team, our management team, of just being so good at picking up this young talent lately, which is super duper cool, and keeping with the prospects, one last update here, is that Maceo Phillips officially signs with Medicine Hat, so it'll be, we just saw him, obviously representing Team USA as well at the World Junior Summer Showcase, we just saw his name, but he was a guy who impressed a lot at that training camp at Winsport a couple weeks ago, in the shootout of all things for, you know, a big defenseman, but either way, it'll be awesome to see him develop a little bit closer to home, just down the road over in Med Hat, so it'll be awesome to see him play there, we've seen a lot of good prospects come out of the Medicine Hat organization over the past few years here, so let's hope that obviously continues with good ol' Phillips, now, let's get into the trade deadline of all things, as there was some news about it today, we know when it is, so, the 2027 NHL trade deadline has been set for Monday, March 1st, per Russo Hockey, so interesting that it's on a Monday, not on a Friday or anything, but right at the beginning of March is, you know, good to know, that'll be a big weekend for the Flames, I think, heading up, if we know anything about Craig Conroy, he prefers to make trades kind of in the week leading up to the trade deadline, more than on deadline day, I know that's not exactly what happened this year, there was the big Cawdry trade on deadline day this past season, but, you know, you think of the Lindholm trade, Hanifin, Tanev, even last year with Anderson and Wiggs as well, they were traded before the trade deadline, so, kind of that late February range is going to be quite interesting, there's no Olympic break this year, so, a lot of games to be played during then, but there were some thoughts, C.F. Redsendal pointed out that Bud, and we've heard a lot about White Cloud rumors lately, a lot of Flames fans want to keep him, more, see more value in trading him away, but, you know, we won't be surprised if he's still a Flame by late February, there's going to be a plethora of Zach White Cloud rumors, and I'm sure he'll be on the top of a lot of trade bait boards, more thoughts, Ryan Pike says the trade deadline falls on a Monday in 2026-27, which is actually quite interesting, again, I said not on a Friday, it feels like it's usually on a Friday, maybe I'm wrong about that, but it's on a Monday, he also says the Flames play in Vancouver the prior Saturday, February 27, and then host Edmonton on the Wednesday, so the trade deadline is in a three-day gap between games for them, which is honestly very interesting, they won't have to focus on games, and they can definitely focus on the 28th and the 1st on trades, if need be, who knows what kind of team the Flames will be at that point, who knows who they still might be trading away, it could be White Cloud, it could be Zeri, Will Frost be in the mix, maybe guys like Siplyakov, Sharon Govich, there's others as well, or maybe the Flames will just shock everyone, they'll be undefeated by late February, and they'll look to acquire some players like Sidney Crosby or something, maybe I'm dreaming there, but either way, again, another thing, I could have made another trade rumor video today, to be quite honest, because a lot of people are talking about Zeri, but I think when it comes to the trade deadline, if he is still a Flame, he will be kind of the main guy in those rumors, unless he obviously pops off and has a really good season, but just based off a couple headlines today, you know on Daily Hive, saying why a Connor Zeri trade still feels likely for the Flames, another says, the Calgary Flames dropped the ball with Zeri, just comparing him to the Sam Bennett situation, which is completely valid, but again, I imagine White Cloud will dominate the headlines by the trade deadline, if Zeri is still a Flame, he'll be in there as well, we'll hear about Frost too, I'm sure he'll be on some boards, but I don't see him being traded quite as likely, but hey, just prepare yourself for March 1st, 2027, now let's get into the comment of the day to wrap up this video, as we love to do here on the channel, comes from yesterday's video, of course, and this is a pretty simple one, but a good one here from Frank, saying, White Cloud should be a keeper, who at this price would you replace him with, you can't, and he falls into the category of, there's more value in keeping White Cloud, and that's a valid take, there's also the valid take of saying, hey, he's so valuable, we can trade him away, it frees up a spot for one of the young defensemen that we have so many of, that's valid as well, he will be valuable heading up to the deadline for sure, so whether you think we should keep him or trade him, there's no denying his value, either way, you see it, thank you so much for watching this video, please subscribe if you like what you saw here today, and have a wonderful rest of your day.
