Millions of people flush wipes every day, believing the label tells the whole story. But who actually decides what "flushable" means? The answer reveals why plumbers, wastewater utilities, and manufacturers often don't agree.

Every day, millions of "flushable" wipes disappear with the push of a toilet handle. But does flushable really mean they'll behave like toilet paper? The answer is more complicated than most people realize.

Modern flushable wipes are often made from plant-sourced cellulose fibers rather than plastic fibers. That sounds reassuring until you realize paper towels, cotton shirts, cardboard, and blue jeans also come from plants. Being made from plants doesn't automatically mean a product quickly breaks apart in water.

Unlike toilet paper, flushable wipes are engineered to stay strong while you use them. Toilet paper is engineered to do exactly the opposite. That design difference explains why the two products behave so differently once they're flushed.

So, who decides what "flushable" actually means?
There is no federal agency that certifies products as flushable before they're sold.

Manufacturers evaluate their products against industry testing standards, while many plumbers and wastewater utilities argue that those tests don't always reflect real-world plumbing and sewer conditions. That's why you'll often hear very different opinions depending on whom you ask.

We'll also take a close look at the fine print on a package of DUDE Wipes and explain why those usage instructions and cautions matter. Then we'll perform a simple jar test comparing toilet paper, paper towel, a diaper wipe, and a flushable wipe so you can watch how each behaves in water.

The next time you see the word flushable, you'll understand exactly what it does...and what it doesn't...promise.
