The Antique Stops We Never Planned to Make

Three unexpected stops lead us to some of the most surprising vintage finds of the entire trip.
High winds push us away from the freeway and onto the back roads of Utah as we travel west to the Portland Rose City Vintage Show in Portland, Oregon. A rusty 1940s truck leads us to Junk in the Trunk, a deceptively large vendor mall filled with antiques, vintage treasures, and plenty of unexpected discoveries. Among the cigar cutters, saddles, minerals, and cow skulls, we find a great MCM swag lamp, an unusual pyrography basket, a Shell station banner, a 1910s beer tray, and a Red Wing set that earns space in the van.
After crossing miles of wide-open country, we reach Kimberley, Idaho, just before the last shop closes. Pure Vintage lives up to its name, with piano rolls in the window and rooms filled with Florentine painted furniture, jadeite, illustrated books, painted cabinets, and other beautiful pieces. A charming Murano duck becomes one more memorable find as we continue west, wondering whether the next stop can possibly top this one.
The next morning in Pendleton, Oregon, a simple garage sale sign sends us up a hill beyond the town’s famous Round Up and Knitting Mills. There, a collector is selling ten years of stored vintage, and the hunt quickly becomes one of the highlights of the trip. Thermoses, linens, spool-carved prints, enamelware, and a cute 1950s valise fill the last open spaces in our van, leaving us packed and ready to introduce these finds to new collectors at the antique show.
