This video analyzes a heated confrontation between pitcher Caleb Ferguson and umpire Bill Miller after Miller accidentally obstructed a play. The narrator explores the series of frustrating events leading up to the outburst, the inherent risks umpires face on the field, and a detailed chronological look at Bill Miller's physical mobility throughout his career.
We all love a good umpire argument, but this time it's just very uncalled for. It's mean.
And then stick around because we did maybe the dumbest deep dive we've ever done. It's good
stuff. This breakdown is brought to you by Amazon. Now, the frustration started before the incident.
Right here, Ferguson, the pitcher, he actually gets in his own way. That should be a ground ball
out. Instead, it's a base hit. All he has to do is not touch it. So he's kind of his own enemy here.
And then it's got to be a quick play. It's not. It was deflected ball. He can't handle it.
Next batter comes up. We get the double play ball. So it's okay. We got out of it, except no,
they don't turn the double play. So now the frustration is twofold. That should have been
a double play. For some reason, it's not. Even if he catches it, I don't think they did it in time.
So now the infielders, they're just looking around, avoiding each other, looking around,
avoiding everyone, feeling bad about what's going on on the field, not feeling great.
Next batter comes up, first pitch low, and he strikes a pose on the pitcher,
and maybe that's going to frustrate him because no one knows what that's about. Never seen this
pose be struck at all in the batter's box. He jumps out of it. He's like, oh, ----,
what happened? What'd I do? I got stuck. Tipping my cap. Strike one and one. Next pitch. Did he go?
No. Another. Add it to the list of things that are annoying Caleb Ferguson and putting him in a bad
mood. Two-one pitch. Fouled back. Two-strike pitch is chopped. Put up the middle. That's, oh, no.
Umpire Bill Miller gets in the way instead of the last out of the inning. We've got first and third
and Caleb Ferguson. It's like the fifth thing that's made him mad. He's going to take his
frustration out on Bill. Get your ******* fat ass out of the way. Fat ************.
Mean. Bill Miller's like, whoa, you just say that to me? That's mean. Timeout. Timeout. I used to
be young like you, Caleb, and I look like you. Be careful. You know, look at me here. People get old.
Lori McKenna. She'll tell you all about it. But he did. He did get in the way. He did get put in
turnstile. Just had no idea where to go. So the infielder's like, oh, my God. They're still not
looking at anyone. Francona's going long neck on him. Oh, oh, guys. And, you know, he thinks the
shortstop's going to get this ball. So his instinct is to move to the other side of the field because
the ball's hit on the shortstop side, but he doesn't have the awareness of the shift. The
second baseman's coming. Realizes, oh, my God, I'm in his way. Tries to stop. Gets in his way
even more. And then Ellie had to stop and pause. So, yeah, it's not great. But umpires get hit all
the time. Look at Adrian Johnson here. Right to the leg. I went and found all the times the umpires
get hit when they're in the middle. And it happens a lot. Look at that. That was right to the nuts.
He couldn't get out of the way. Right here. It's ricochet. Double ricochet. Hits the ump.
This ump. That's CB Buckner. Right to him. You know, it's part of the game. They're part of the
field. Oh, this guy died. Oh, just joking. That's Gooch. He's a funny ump. If you don't know him,
you should know him as one of the funny umps going, made a catch here. Yeah, look how spry I
am. Yep. And you probably remember this. Jumps over McMahon. Yeah, you're out, baby. He loves
himself. And I like him. So, he didn't die. He just had some fun. But sometimes umpires get hit
and it helps the pitchers. Caleb Ferguson. So, you know, beggars can't be choosers. That could
have been a double. Instead, it's not. This one. Probably a double if it doesn't hit the umpire.
Instead, it's not a double. It's a single. And then an out. So, you know, that's a gift.
Umpires are part of the field of play. Even when they're skinny and young and spry,
they still get hit. So, stop picking on 60-year-old Bill Miller. He tried his hardest,
all right? It's too bad, really. And that's fun. You know, too bad. Ump got in your way.
Could have got out of the inning. Still can get an out and end this whole thing. Oh, two. Get
some swinging. ****! Whoa! Didn't even cause any harm now and you're still just yelling at Bill?
What did Willie Miller do to you besides get in the way and extend your inning? Bill Miller's like,
all right, dude. I hear you. Jeez. I hear you. You should see my tape though. Used to be young.
Used to be spry. You'll catch up. And I said, let's go find that tape, Bill. Here he is at 31
years old. And let's see. He's got the feet moving here. This is his second year as an ump.
We tried to look for all the same plays. Look, he's way on the turf, running and busting. And
now he's 35 years old. And when a runner's on first, the umpire is usually on the infield grass
and they do this little like banana peel to get in position. Look at that. Oh, did you see that?
That ball was right at him. Watch him dive out. Yep. Dodged it. That's a Chris Berman highlight.
Look at that. 35. Five years older than Caleb Ferguson and moving, right?
Moving. Keep going. 35 years old. Banana peel. He's all over it. Let's look at him when he's
40 years old on the grass. Still banana peel. Get into position. Didn't stop moving. Look at that.
Watching the ball moving, making the call. Here he is running around. Yep. Easy. Here he is. Look
on the move, getting in position. The ball goes, lets the runner through and great job. Way to go.
Willie Miller in position. Easy. 45 years old, still moving across that grass, getting into
position, getting a little more poorly. Oh, but 51 year old Bill Miller, is it going to hit him?
No, it's not. A little dodgier movement though. You know, it's not that whoop. It's a little more
tiptoes and oh no, oh no, oh no. So what happens is in 2018, he says, you know what? I'm going to
start playing from not on the grass. The legs aren't what they used to be. So he moves back
here and this is when the turnstile starts really coming into play. He's just moving around. Now
he's in, but oh no, what's going on? See, we're getting, oh no, this, what a play. I mean, did
he make that play happen? Run into the umpire behind the back play. So credit Billy Miller
for that one. Look at this. Look at those tiptoes. Great job. Coming in, watching, ducking.
So it's just, it's just a deep dive of how one umpire has, oh, look at that 52 years old going
the grapevine, sidestepping. Just how he's developed his style. He's still moving there at 53.
I think that's the first year of the gut though. This side profile right here. And it happens to
everyone. It'll happen to you, Caleb Ferguson, right? Stand by Bill Miller. He did get in the
way though. And he's gotten in the way more because he's getting older and he doesn't want
to get hit by the ball. So now he's standing in a position that they don't advise you to stand in.
And it is causing a lot more chaos. 56 year old Bill Miller. He's just hustling. Look at this.
Look at this one right here. All arms and little steps. The head's stable though. Making plays,
hustling. So there you have it. There's one more important thing that I have to share. Caleb
Ferguson apologized pretty immensely and seemingly felt very terrible for his outburst and was like,
I'm so sorry. And here it is. Don't feel great about it for sure. Definitely pretty, very
uncharacteristic for myself. You know, as long as I've been in this game, I don't know if you'll
find a clip of me going into an umpire like that. So definitely going to have to wear that one on
the chest and going to seek Bill out or try to at some point and definitely make it right with him
because very unprofessional on my part. So I've got to be better. Now you can say you've watched
the progression of an umpire from 30 years old to 60 year olds and how he moves around the middle
of the field. Not many people could say that before today, zero probably. And thank you to
MLB for helping us find this footage and the team here for putting it together. And thank you guys
