Guard Dog Refuses To Leave Abandoned Suitcase Until Police Discover Boy Inside

Grace Whitfield was walking home along the canal path just after six when she saw a stray dog standing over a suitcase that had been left near the footbridge.

The dog would not move. Not for Grace, not for the two officers who arrived after her call, not for anyone who came near the case in the following twenty minutes.

Inside, wrapped in a towel, was a newborn girl. She was alive.

The dog, later named Scout by the shelter that took him in, had no collar, no microchip, and no known history with the case or the child. A veterinary behaviorist consulted afterward offered a careful explanation. She did not call it certain. She called it plausible.
