As is known, Baku has criticized the Israeli government's decision to recognize the events of 1915 as a "genocide." The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, in a statement issued last month, stated that such steps serve not to promote reconciliation and mutual understanding, but to further deepen existing contradictions and hinder efforts for lasting peace and reconciliation in the region.
The Israeli cabinet unanimously adopted a proposal on June 28 to recognize the events of 1915 as a "genocide." The decision requires parliamentary approval for it to come into force. The decision of the Israeli cabinet was made against the backdrop of recent increased tensions in relations with Turkey. However, it later became known that the Israeli Knesset suspended the vote on the issue of recognizing the so-called "Armenian genocide." The Haaretz newspaper writes that the issue of recognizing the "Armenian genocide" was removed from the agenda of the Israeli Knesset after pressure from Azerbaijan. It was noted that Israeli officials assured the Azerbaijani side that the issue of recognizing the so-called "Armenian genocide" was removed from the Knesset agenda. According to an Israeli source, the vote, proposed by Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, was blocked by Benjamin Netanyahu after Hikmet Hajiyev, the assistant to the president and head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan, contacted the Prime Minister's Office on behalf of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Haaretz writes that the Israeli government then informed Azerbaijani officials that it had removed the issue from the Knesset agenda and that it was therefore not put to a vote in the last plenary sessions before the summer recess. According to Israeli historian and political scientist Avraham Shmulevich, the idea of the Israeli government recognizing the "Armenian genocide" is very strange: "The Knesset, let's say, recognizes the events that took place, what will happen next? In fact, this is completely absurd. This is only a step that destabilizes the situation in the South Caucasus, destabilizes Turkey-Armenia and Turkey-Armenia-Azerbaijan relations. Even if you do not understand Azerbaijan's reaction in Israel, you should still know that it exists. This decision does not have a special impact on Turkey, and the Armenians themselves are extremely dissatisfied. This is, in fact, a blow to Pashinyan and to some extent strengthens Russia's position. Because Russia is currently interested in ensuring that Armenia remains in its orbit and, accordingly, in worsening Armenia-Azerbaijan and Armenia-Turkey relations and interfering in the normalization process".
