Hello and welcome to Inside Taiwan, where we take a deeper look at the stories shaping the country.
I'm Yvonne Yang.
From breakdancing in temples to graffiti murals on mazu,
Wang Jiemin and his crew are reimagining Yilan's ancient rituals
using street art to keep local heritage alive for a new generation.
When I was 15 years old, I joined a group of young people
and they won the championship.
I didn't know Yilan kids could do that.
There's a song called Yilan Song.
It's a song from Yilan.
If you go to Yilan, you'll never forget your roots.
That's where we come from.
We're re-evolving the tradition
and making it a part of our youth.
Yilan Song
This is the third time we're doing this.
A little to the left and right.
We've been doing this for three or four years now.
We're preparing to graduate.
This is the first year of college.
We just started.
We just started college.
We have three years of high school.
Two years and one year.
To the left and right.
To the right and left.
After graduating from college,
I went abroad to start my career.
After visiting many countries
and attending the Street Art Festival,
I decided to come back to Yilan
and do street art.
On the main street of Yilan Cultural Park,
a group of 14-year-old and 20-year-old young people
are doing street art.
There's even an exhibition
showing young people
doing street art in the past.
What did you learn today?
Zou Ding Ai Shi.
No.
Jie Ding Ai Shi.
Zou Ding Dao Li Zui.
She started doing street art
when she was a kid.
She was studying at Banqiao.
Later, Jie decided to come back to Yilan
to promote the culture here.
We followed her to Yilan.
We live in Jilong.
It's quite far.
But wherever the teacher is,
we follow the teacher.
You're representing Yilan.
You're still representing Yilan.
There's a competition in Taiwan
that's like a traditional street art festival.
So last year,
we formed a group
and won the championship.
The students saw their dreams
and realized that
Yilan kids can do street art too.
Hit, hit.
Slide, hit, hit.
Hit, hit, hit, hit.
When I used to do street art,
I used to do it in elementary school.
The police would come
and beat us up.
We used to live in peace.
This is Park Ying Zui,
He's the eldest son in the family.
Because of street art,
Park Ying Zui became
from a street kid.
I used to do street art in elementary school.
Then in high school,
I started doing street art.
When I was in high school,
I met Jimmy.
He taught me street art
and a lot of street culture.
Some kids
don't like to study.
After they finish street art,
they use their negative energy
to do street art.
So they don't spend a lot of time
doing street art outside.
Here's the highlight.
When Jimmy was a kid,
he was also a friend of Yilan's
Hong Kong people.
He was very passionate about
traditional street culture.
But what new creativity
did street art and traditional culture
bring out?
They don't have the opportunity
to go out and do street art.
Why not?
It's the right time to do it.
The fastest way to understand
the local community
is to participate in
traditional culture activities.
So I often bring
the kids here
to learn about
traditional culture
and show them
how to do street art.
Welcome to
this year's
Wang Gong Temple's
teaching class.
Today's teacher is
the old friend of Wang Gong Temple,
Grandpa Lin Kun-tzu.
Let's give him a round of applause.
Once a year,
a group of Hong Kong kids
come here to learn
about Hong Kong street art
and traditional culture.
I'm interested in street art.
I started learning
because I like dancing.
I want to combine
street culture
with some traditional
customs and customs.
I want to combine them.
The kids come here
to learn about
traditional things.
Then we innovate
to see how to combine them.
Hello.
I'm a college student at Wang Gong Temple.
I'm a college student at Tseng University.
I'm here to learn
about local
Japanese people
and other
young people in Yilan.
I didn't think
it would be this hard.
But every time you dance,
you have to clap your hands.
If you clap your hands,
people here will hear you.
You've been here for a long time.
I've been here for more than half of my life.
Now, I tell people
that we have to
live in the present.
We have to change
the past
into the future.
It's a process
to turn your imagination
into reality.
It's a one-time culture.
No one would think
this could be
a one-time thing.
I started dancing
when I was in high school.
I've been dancing for 10 years.
People call it
hip-hop culture.
There's street dance,
hip-hop,
and DJing.
I started dancing
when I was in high school.
Yilan Street Dance
Association
is an association
of street dancers,
rappers,
DJs,
and other young people
from Yilan.
They organize events
to promote street dance
and street culture.
I know Rui Zhen
and Xiao Ma
are street dancers.
So I thought
I should invite them
to perform.
We used to perform
outside,
in front of people.
The police called
and we had to go to
the media
and pay for it.
But we didn't
paint the place.
We just left it there.
At that time,
Wang Jianmin had a lot of money
and wanted to transform.
So I used my method
to paint Mazu,
Qianli Sunfeng, Longfeng,
and Miaoyu.
I'm going to paint
a scene and a character.
I asked everyone to write it down.
Let's draw a character
one by one.
Please come in.
Su Ru and Ma Zai
dance in the park.
In the association
and nearby schools,
some mothers bring their kids
and some high school students.
Some people even
come here to work.
Where are you from?
I'm from Hualien.
Isn't it far?
Eleven o'clock.
It's okay.
It's love.
It's a process
to turn your imagination
into reality.
For me,
is more free.
The dog is swimming in the zoo.
The zoo is here.
It's drowned.
It's too small.
It may be in a
conspicuous place
or a corner of the city.
It can reach more people.
Newcomers may see it.
Whether it's good or bad,
it will leave something
in their hearts.
Today, the zoo
is going to build a road.
To build a road,
they need to build a car
and a house.
They also need to prepare
for a big event.
This year's participants
are all young people.
It's their first time,
so they're nervous.
We're going to build
a new road
to celebrate
the opening
of the zoo.
We're going to build
a new road.
What's the purpose
of this road?
What's the purpose
of this road?
What's the purpose
of this road?
My friends asked me to build a road.
I'm nervous too.
I used to build a road,
but everyone said,
I'm going to build a road.
It's different now.
Some young people
haven't built a house yet.
If you build a house,
you have to ask people
to build it for you.
It's a bit of a burden.
The second round.
The second round
is almost over.
I thought it wouldn't be me.
I thought it would be me.
But I was wrong.
I was wrong.
Do you remember
the first time you came to the zoo
and said goodbye?
You said,
I'm going to build a road.
I didn't think you would say that.
I just thought it would be you.
I'm going to build a road.
I'll build a road.
Do you still feel embarrassed?
I don't feel embarrassed.
I can't answer that.
We want to be local.
That's why we used local language.
Usually.
We've been thinking
how to connect with the local people.
So we have a song
called Gi-ran-sheng.
The rapper's group
is full of kids.
Recently, he's been promoting his own album.
He's good friends with Mr. Ong.
They talk and make music together.
It's a one-time culture.
No one would have thought
that this kind of thing
could be combined with our tradition.
This temple is
run by our own kids,
our own friends,
Jaymin.
So I asked him
if we could collaborate.
In China,
they have their own style.
Hip-hop,
in the US,
is their own thing.
But in Taiwan,
they don't really have
their own hip-hop style.
So we thought
if we could combine with the local people,
could we create
our own music in Taiwan?
On behalf of Gi-ran-sheng,
we want to thank you
for taking care of our kids.
You don't have to leave.
Some people think
hip-hop is too old-fashioned
and should stay in the image
of bad kids and street kids.
But Jaymin's music
is very local.
In his words and music,
you can see his love for Gi-ran.
Hip-hop can teach us
some bad kids.
It can help local kids
because of the popular culture
of Chiayi
to make a name for themselves
in Taiwan.
Taiwan has its own
religious culture,
so we want to participate.
When I was in high school,
I just started dancing.
At that time,
my family was against it.
So I needed more time
to think about it.
It would be better
to see the feeling
after a long time.
It would be better
and I would be more confident
to do what I want to do.
I represented Taiwan
in many competitions.
I won the champion
in Korea, China
and other countries.
I want to use my dancing
to represent Yilan
to let more people know
that Yilan has
good dancers.
Everyone needs to find
their own culture.
So I want to bring this
back to my hometown.
His 12,000 pieces of clay
are very rare.
The ceremony
is about to begin.
We need to ask him
about the temple.
Let me call him.
This is a cultural product
How much is one piece?
350 NTD
Can you do it?
OK, OK.
Good luck.
When the ceremony begins,
they go to the nearby village
and perform the ritual.
This is a very famous
ritual in Yilan.
This ritual is very special.
Our ancestors
used their bodies
as a shield
to protect the temple.
The firecrackers
represent good luck
and good luck
for the new year.
The villagers also
carry the firecrackers
and wish them luck.
This is not grass.
This is charcoal.
You misunderstood.
This is charcoal.
The charcoal we just used.
This is charcoal.
This is the firecrackers.
It can eliminate
bad luck.
The firecrackers
are used to light up
the temple.
The firecrackers
are used to light up
the temple.
The firecrackers
symbolize good luck.
This has been around for years.
The firecrackers
are also traditional.
However,
we need to
keep up with the times
and encourage young people.
We don't take away
all the traditional things.
We evolve the tradition
and pass it on
to young people.
So,
including the members
of the village council,
the village secretary,
the village chief,
and the secretary,
they are all young people.
There are a lot of people today, right?
Yes, a lot.
I'm exhausted.
You must be too.
I'm exhausted, too.
I'm exhausted.
We can rejuvenate
the village council
so that more young people
can come back
to the village council
to pray
for a better Hong Kong.
Taiwan has
a strong religious culture.
That's why I'm here.
He always tells us
that culture is very important.
If everyone
doesn't remember the culture,
there will be nothing left.
There's a song
called the sound of Yilan.
It's about
the people from Yilan
who are here
no matter how far away
or how hard it is,
we never forget our roots.
We come from here.
They will definitely
bring the things
they want to do
back to the village
to develop
and contribute to the village.
We can help
the local youth
to participate in
this popular culture
and make a name for themselves
The village council
has a strong connection
with the village council.
Cultural exchanges
make the village more diverse.
According to the local tradition,
Yilan kids
connect the past with the future
and create a new culture.
Bank manager-turned-artist
Lai Chuan-Chuang
preserves Hakka culture
through rhythmic nursery rhymes
and lifelike ceramics,
transforming everyday life
into a vibrant,
lasting family legacy.
When it comes to Cantonese,
Cantonese is very famous.
I can speak it
without any problems.
It's a very typical language.
The local Hakka people
are very open.
They are very open
to learning the language.
The Hakka people
have a lot of fear.
We don't know how to speak the language.
If we don't know how to speak the language,
we won't learn it.
We won't learn it.
It means that you still have a chance.
You still have a chance.
It won't be very straightforward.
But the language
is very natural.
When you see a pig,
you don't see a pig's head.
When you see a pig,
you don't see a pig's head.
Hakka people are like that.
They are like that.
The language is
with everyday life.
When you see a water fountain,
you see a water fountain.
That's an action.
The way the Hakka people
express their communication
is very interesting.
They always show
their culture of cooperation.
When you see a river,
you graze on it.
This is the northern way.
In the southern way,
Hakka people say
mountain goats,
goats free from pigs.
Why is it that?
It is clear.
It means that
the mountain goats eat pigs.
I want to eliminate as many pigsties
in this place to keep an account.
In order for 99% of Hakka people
to speak Hakka,
Hakka people need to
