Inside Our 50ft Aluminum Explorer Yacht

We just crossed the English Channel. We've dropped the hook here in southeast England and we've gotten back into boat life. We've had some personal touches to our home so now we feel like it's the perfect time to introduce you to our home and a vessel that's going to take us around this part of the world. Exactly and we will start with the name. So this is Undra and we named her that because it is a Swedish word that means curiosity, awe and wonder which felt very fitting for us and our journey. She is a 50-foot Dutch built aluminum explorer yacht and we'll tell you of course all about her today and show you everything but we need to get underway because we've got the tides that are going to change soon and we need to go with them because we have to make our way to our next destination. So we bought this boat at auction which was definitely a risk but she ticked more of our boxes than any other boat that we looked at in this size range. Plus the original owner that built her really focused on sustainability both in terms of like living on the vessel but also in the materials that he chose and it really appealed to us. Well we might as well start at the top here. All the way forward you may notice some indentions in the front of the boat that is steps so you can come up to ice maybe a glacier or a beach and step right off. It also acts as another way to board the vessel if you were to fall off or when you're swimming make it less dramatic. We have 100 meters of chain. We have 60 meters of rope. We have a Maxwell windlass, a Mantis 105 pound anchor with a Mantis swivel and a Mantis bridle. There's also a wash down pump up here so we can rinse while we're bringing up the anchor. We also have cork decking here which is a little bit cooler underfoot and it's also a great insulator so it keeps it cooler or warmer on the inside depending on the season. It's a sustainable option but even better is the fact that it's really easy to keep clean. All we have to do is rinse it off. No soaps, no hardcore scrubbing, just simple. There's massive bollards that are welded in so they are very strong. They're not just connected in or screwed in so there's less opportunity for corrosion. The same with the handrails. They're all welded in very strong. They feel very safe. Connection points, all sorts of stuff. Yes and then over here is maybe I think going to be one of our favorite spots while we're underway and it's beautiful like it is today. This nice lounge just tucked under the brow so I get my face shaded. I can get sun on my legs which I desperately need. I won't take off my shirt and say how bad that is and then we also have derails. These are Vetus derails. They are flexible silicone. We can put in metal ones if we decide we don't like these. I think they're pretty cool. I like them. They don't rust and they're easy to clean. We can completely remove them or we can turn them when we're underway in heavy seas or once we get to anchor we turn them this way and they bring in a lot of fresh air. They are closable inside which we'll see when we go down to the bedroom. This guy must be in a big hurry to get somewhere because he's fighting a two knot current. Of course we've said it's aluminum but it is seven mil aluminum and that is the entire vessel so the whole thing is incredibly strong and it's also fairly obvious that it is raw aluminum. It is unpainted and we like it that way because it oxidizes and then protects itself. No waxing, no buffing. That just means less time, less money, less product so that's pretty awesome. We've also got the brow built in here which we really really really really like with the reverse rake windows. Our windows aren't extremely angled but there is just a slight bit which really helps the water to fall off if any does end up there. Of course we've also got windshield wipers for that but the brow provides a little bit of shade which really just helps keep the pilot house so much cooler so we're big fans of the brow. So up here we have some GPS stuff. We have a massive searchlight which goes almost one kilometer, Starlink, and an air horn. Got an air compressor down below that this thing blows at the loudest. I accidentally hit the button and blew it the other day in an acreage and I got really embarrassed. We also have the biggest hatch I've ever seen for ventilation and then two smaller hatches. These are both Vita style hatches and then we get into our mast rigging and our mast. So we have our hailer, we have our radar, a lightning protection thing which is a very expensive piece of snake oil. It's a very piece of equipment. Some 4G and 5G antennas and then other antennas as well. Low pole lights and lighting to go down and light up everything. This boat gets lit up at night if you want it to be and the reason we have this mast rigging is because the mast is designed to fold down. How about how about I don't cut myself off. The mast manually folds down and that allows us to go through canals because there's a certain height requirement for some bridges and while I'm on the canals I think that gives us like super flexibility. We can be a river and canal boat or we can be an ocean going boat and the reason she can do both is also because of her depth. 1.3 meters deep. That's 0.1 meter more shallow than our last catamaran. That kind of blows my mind and then while we're on the hull shape it is a V-shaped hull. It's very efficient that cuts through the water and her bottom is covered in something called EcoSpeed ice rated paint. It's like a single application paint that gives you really good insulation from corrosion and in theory it should last a lifetime with only minor touch-ups. We did just do some touch-ups. We dove into it a little bit more in that video but I am interested in seeing how it goes because the theory behind it no more bad anti-foul. We have three steering stations on this boat which is a lot for a 50-foot boat so we've got the one up here on the what you would call flybridge. I find it interesting because when we were looking at boats the guy that was showing us around the Nordhavn's great boat he said funny thing is the flybridge is rarely get used by most people but nobody wants to buy a boat without one and I do find that to be true. Everybody we've talked to that has one it's super rare and for ourselves so far we haven't spent a ton of time up here. I think just because there's other places to lounge on the boat. I don't know we could change our minds on that but this is a pretty good solution for having a flybridge but without investing too much in equipment because it's just a little mobile station so it can be on either side depending on if you're maybe coming up to a dock and you need better visibility or just want to steer from up here because maybe you're whale watching or there's dolphins or something like that I don't know there will be uses for it I am sure. So we've got a nice little station here. It has everything we need chart plotter and fu controller thrusters and engine controls throttle control and the very very loud horn which I accidentally hit but then we've got a big huge seating area I can't see coming up here for like sundowners enjoy sunset sunrises that kind of thing and of course I would say probably the coolest thing on this boat might be a stretch the helipad obviously a bit of a joke because you're not going to land an actual helicopter on top of this boat but it works really well for the drone. Being the rugged explorer yacht that we are we do have a crane but it's a little bit of a point of contention for us because we haven't figured out exactly how we want to utilize this crane this is the way the boat came with the tender placed up here and you use the crane to lower it down and bring it up it's not difficult because the tender is empty there's nothing in it there's no motor on it there's no battery in our case you know fuel whatever so it's not that heavy and it really can't take any more weight than this right here because it is a manually operated crane I understand why they did that because they don't want you actually lifting anything all that heavy up here because this is a semi-displacement boat so you're not supposed to have a ton of weight up high you want to kind of keep it central and low that said it's a very small tender for the size of boat it's already as big as it can possibly get for up here but I'll show you a little davit system down below later and that's probably what we're going to go with I think this is going to work great for like kayaks paddleboards that kind of stuff we're just quickly taking them directly from the water hoisting them all the way to up here and being able to store those up here the most important feature for 400 watt sun power solar panels and they have been keeping up with our house load pretty well the summer days are so long that we really can bring in enough solar to cook run the hot water tank the fridge everything we need for normal living they are rigid solar panels and they're mounted with an air gap in between the ceiling below so it does help dissipate heat really well I've been very happy with this install and now we have just reinstalled our two 400 watt wind generators and I'm hoping with the addition of those we'll be able to never have to worry about power that's a dream but seriously I think we're going to be set up really well on days where it's windy and cloudy or days where it's sunny and no wind and that is all of the upper deck and that's man it is a warm one we'll put on some more sunscreen walk through this very watertight small door and welcome to the pilot house which I will definitely give you the grand and it has been a brutal summer already because Europe just came out of a heat wave and the east coast of the U.S. just had one and we're only in the beginning of summer so that's not good because add in a little extra sweating and then maybe if anybody gets seasick or a little traveler's diarrhea and man everything goes downhill fast when you get dehydrated which is why we always keep a solid stash of electrolytes on board specifically element is also the sponsor of today's video we have been using element for gosh I don't even know how long now long enough to know that we love it because the flavors are really good and I know that's a silly reason to love an electrolyte drink but trust me if you've gone to the pharmacy and you've picked up the other stuff it is like punishment you're trying not to throw up which was the problem in the first place trying to keep one of those things down I think Jason we picked up one in a pharmacy I don't it was like blackberry or something I don't know but it was from a pharmacy in France not knocking the French just whatever that brand was it was horrific anyway really like element it's no dodgy ingredients no sugar no extras just sodium potassium magnesium natural flavors so this one is mango chili which is kind of my probably all-time favorite I do love them all but the mango chili is sort of like a spicy margarita but of course a virgin version so I am hydrating not dehydrating with alcohol cold water two cool things about element they have a no questions asked return policy so you can get your money back for any reason whatsoever and the second one is they give away their recipe if you go to their website they outline exactly how to make it and that just tells me that they really care about keeping people hydrated aside from it just being a tasty beverage which is still important because the tastier something is the more likely I am to drink it dehydration is really bad especially when you're operating heavy machinery or doing anything else important because if you get dehydrated mental clarity starts to go focus is gone you get fatigued to make bad decisions that's not good so if you would like to give it a try for yourself you can head over to drink lmt.com slash gone with the winds and they will give you a free sample pack with any purchase so don't fret over which flavor to choose because you'll get that sample pack I personally do love the mango chili but they have a new flavor called lemonade iced tea which if you are a fan of an Arnold Palmer like I am then I think that is going to be right up my alley I will leave a link down in the description box below or you can head over to drink lmt.com slash gone with the winds well we're actually getting really close to entering the port and the marina so we will finish the tour when we're all tied up and settled okay back to the helm tour so we came from catamaran sailing and so the biggest change for us is having a pilot house right having this huge area to navigate from and being protected through all the different weather is also really nice and then as far as boats like this go we looked at so many and so often they're very compartmentalized like the pilot house is separate from the galley from the salon you'll see a lot of walls or doors or partitions and you have to kind of go in and out of each space but this is one big flow and I can see not only forward but from every angle all the way back to what's behind me and I don't need any cameras for that we really liked the overall airiness and the visibility that we got with this pilot house having two captain's chairs is really nice because we get to sit up here together on passage and they're both pretty equal this one's a little bit higher so whoever's sitting here is in command it's a good booster seat yeah it's got like that much higher it moves forward and backwards we change that out and it spins 90 degrees so this area turns into a desk this is my office here can also be a chart table or something like that if you're not into working on a computer 50 hours a week like I am and then it does yes slide back and forth which is great it also helps Nikki when she's steering because she can put her feet up more easily and like she said it is a beautiful view and we have access to all of our controls I can easily reach the throttles I can reach the controllers I can reach all the autopilot the thrusters everything's within reach for me and if I pull it forward for Nikki this is how we steer the boat and to people who are not used to power boats this seems very foreign they're looking for a wheel it's one of the biggest comments we get we're like they're like how do you steer without a wheel well don't worry it boggled my mind too whenever I first got into this but this is essentially like a tiny tiller you just move it just like you would if you were using a tiller on a small boat it does become intuitive it's just a little weird in the very beginning but not bad we do have backup steering if there is ever an issue with this we have like an analog version you plug in but it's still a joystick so it's kind of wild things have just changed you don't need a wheel anymore and after we like put our first video out about like our first sea trial our friend Mike who we spent time on his boat immediately sent a message when I made a comment about the wheel and he was like you can have my wheel because I never use it and that has been pretty much the consensus from anybody we have talked to in a powerboat nobody uses their wheel I'm gonna run through all of our gear really quick vhf radio this is the mastervolt easyview 5 that gives us all of our data on our battery state of charge these are basic simrad instruments that we can program with many different things this is an autopilot control this is our volvo penta controls over here if our screens fail and we can't get our engine data then we can get it from here there's also two more of these at the other station so we can always get engine data if we need it obviously start stop here we have two screens and these are just screens there's a computer inside here that controls these screens and they are touch screen here we have our ipad and we always have things like predict wind open and tides and other stuff just so we can keep track of things that aren't on our main screens and then here no i'll come back to that here we have the fu controls for steering like nikki showed this is also follow up this is also um control for the autopilot so we can control the boat with this little dial we have a tiny thing oh yeah and then this is our thrusters so stern thruster bow thruster we have a massive bow thruster and a normal size stern thruster storage here phenox there oh no there you go i don't know why i was just like my binoculars there instead of in there i don't know yeah isn't that funny and then here we have an analog switch panel it's yeah it's very neat i think it looks absolutely so cool it's way better than those like standard breaker switches that you see on most boats they did a really nice job and then this little thingy right here that's where we plug in the emergency steering system this is how we control the spotlight dang it i missed something these are our wiper controls this is our throttle for the engine this is remote control for bow and stern thrusters and that's it all of our electronic connections all of our hardware is stored under this cover and this cover over here they did an excellent job of labeling everything marking it all breakers wires everything is easily accessible i absolutely love the electronics in here i like these helm chairs because the seat part folds up and the armrests fold up so they get out of the way gives you room for traffic and then there is little storage bays everywhere under the captain's chairs under the stairs pretty much everywhere and this leads us right in to seamlessly into the living area we have a nice big tv with surround sound and lovely loungers this is the most comfortable living space we have ever had on a boat because i think it's the first living space like true living space we've ever had on usually it's just like dining tables you don't really have like a proper kind of entertaining lounge area especially to actually like kick back and watch movies which we find ourselves doing quite often and it's really nice and then decorations we've gotten a lot of comments saying oh you guys seem to be adding a lot more like art and decor than you have in the past and that is very true and that's also because we've never had space to put anything we've never had walls to be able to hang anything that's usually everything's either taken up or it's not a convenient place you might need to brace yourself as you're underway so you don't want to put anything there but we kind of have some convenient little spots here for art so we've been collecting art kind of throughout our travels and so now we finally get to display it we picked these up in argentina right when we were on our way back from antarctica and they are called chane masks and they're very cool because they are hand carved from local wood and painted using all of the elements in the forest so that is all natural paints not paint yes i guess that's still paint but that's like old school traditional paint anyway they look amazing hopefully one day we can go back take a trip into the forest and go see how these actually made in person but for now i've got a few for inspiration and then moving on down all the wood in this boat is scandinavian oak and it is all hand laid all hand done but solid at the same exact time so it has a really great warm cozy feel to it which i really like it's been nice to have something wood yeah it is a very well and locally sourced and all that kind of stuff but it just feels very cozy and warm but also extremely durable like you know this stuff is going to look good 10 years from now which is really nice and then we're into the galley area with a huge table and seating area we could easily have dinner for eight people just around this table and it's not our only table which is part of why i got this little bench here which is also for some extra storage but the table is also called a magic table because it has lots of storage don't look too close yeah not organized no but it's great for keeping snacks and all that kind of stuff and then there are more drawers on this side so you got one here one there and one on each side over there so it's like everywhere they could cram storage on this boat they put storage on this boat which i'm not complaining about it's nice to have okay my turn okay i was moving on too quickly what did i miss you're getting so excited so the floors are beautiful yes but they're also heated they have radiant heat run all the way throughout them so they are very toasty in the winter and there are radiators placed throughout the entire boat and all the cabins and the heads and this boat stays super warm in the middle of winter we shot a video just after a massive snowstorm and if you want to know more you can watch that video on that but one other thing i will touch on windows that's where i'm going to oh those are covered those are those are the blinds the curtains those are curtains that nikki did windows okay we'll go back up here these are dual pane insulated windows there's a pane of glass there's a gap in there and then there's another pane of glass and they are very insulated very thick they are very strong i've been very happy with them it's nice because it means that you don't have any condensation and fog on any of the windows we don't get that throughout the whole boat which is really impressive okay back to my station this is the coffee corner i could have a whole entire video about this and the other coffee stuff that we have on this boat but i will save that for later there's plenty of storage everywhere big old drawers huge drawers there are storage compartments under each of these sofas seating areas yeah so we've got so much storage and then the most important storage of all is the one that cleans itself the dishwasher it is a perfect size dishwasher it is absolutely awesome i love it so much that's all i know now nikki's turn just like jason didn't dive into his gadgets i'm not going to dive into every kitchen galley gadget that we have because we'd be here all day but the basics are all here other than the dishwasher we do have an induction cooktop it's four burner works fantastic actually has a decent pot size that's a new feature for me coming from boats it's usually really small i know already came on there and we have a convection oven microwave combo whatever you want to call that and a massive i don't even know how many liters this is i've already forgotten but it's a massive refrigerator for a boat i freaking love it and this whole thing all fridge every bit of it all fridge space it's my my favorite thing in the galley that and the amount of countertop space that we have going on in here so such a cook's kitchen absolutely love it a proper vent that actually vents to the outside so all of the smoke and the steam and everything else gets sent out really like that we also have because it's the little things in life right a pull-out spice rack which i was able to even double up on ah thanks to my silly containers if you haven't ever seen these before these things are awesome they have magnets in them and since they stick to metal i was able to double up on my storage and my spice cabinet we're going to save the tech space the cockpit and all the mechanical stuff for later because there's a lot more interior to do that includes our catamaran inspired monohull because we have two cabins one on each side let's start with the port i'm gonna start with the starboard okay well this is the nicer one this is the main guest cabin right this is the like spare additional people we're gonna cram everybody in which we're about to do come on now we've got tons of storage space and cabinets all throughout this cabin which is really nice when you come and stay with us so you've got good ventilation coming through there and we have queen size beds interesting on this vessel there are three beds and all three are exactly the same size and exactly the same very nice mattress so everybody gets a good night's sleep on this boat oh and even though you might get shoved up against the wall over there which is very common in boats you have a little side table area and an outlet over there so that you can plug in your phone or any other little devices you might need right by your bedside and there are reading lights there as well so nice little touch that's in all the cabins as well moving on in to the head you've got again lots of great cabinet space for a guest head especially in a 50 foot boat because technically we are considered a pocket yacht we are on the small wind when it comes to explorer yachts decent size shower going on in here oh and thermostatic controls which are really awesome because that means you set the temperature once and all you have to do is turn the water on and it's already the perfect temperature oh and that is a vent fan that's another thing that's missing from so many boats that we've looked at it actually sucks the air out and the humidity so you turn this on when you come to take a shower sucks the air the humidity and everything else out and outside like properly out of the boat genius we have the very quiet vitus flush toilets a heated towel rack nice sink a little seating area all of the lighting can be dimmed and what i really like about it is you double click and it goes full you push and hold it goes to the lowest dimming setting and that way you can quickly go from romance to i'm awake under this floor is the water maker and this floor just pops up and there's access straight through to the other side going down into the port cabin we have another electric flush toilet storage storage port lights and yep washer dryer combo unit it works really well i think this model is my favorite also another vent and that's a radiator port and then turning around here we go into the clubhouse i don't know what else to call it like the fort or the clubhouse it's nice and cozy so there's a light here that's also dimmable there's a couple outlets there's a storage cabinet reading lights and over here is access to the engine room so if i need to get in to the forward side of the engine i can just pull off this massive panel of insulation and aluminum that keeps it really quiet and keeps the heat from coming in here that's a nice way to get access to the engine room and then underneath us is the fuel manifold so if i ever have to switch fuel or move fuel from one tank to the other i don't have to mess up the girls or whoever sleeping here you said the girls because we have two teenage girls coming with friends of ours tomorrow so that's going to be our first full house so we'll let you know how it goes behind this door we have a little cubby hole for storage i guess and a port light more importantly this is a three drawer freezer and it freezes really solid ice cream no problem and then just under it is my third favorite cabinet this is the mexican cabinet it is full of hot sauce and tortillas and black beans you know you're from texas because texas loves mexico it's my third favorite drawer like i said and then in here is a sand filter for our water maker the water maker that this boat has pumps out a crap load of water and probably more water than we can possibly use but it's neat it has a sand filter that then pre-filters water before it goes in so i'm excited to turn it on for the first time still amusing probably this week and uh this staircase also just pops up and pulls out and i have access to the agm one bank of the agm batteries and then the other side of the water maker a lot of stuff crammed into this boat this boat is equipped like it is a 65 foot vessel with the three cabins the three heads and all the space and all the open areas but in a 50 foot footprint so they did not waste even an inch in this boat so that's where our guest cabins are and then all the way forward leads into our cabin but first my office huh so i work down here which i kind of like because it's quiet and it's cool and then jason sits up there and he gets the view and also sometimes the sun yes he has to deal with that but it's not bad because there is air conditioning it is really just one ac unit that's made for the main salon area up at the helm it's got big vents up there which is really good and we're down here in the main cabin this is my little office space here a tiny bit awkward because of this wall that's sort of like right where your head is but i don't wear headphones all day like jason does so it works out for me i like having dedicated space because two office spaces in one boat that's hard to beat hidden storage under there with outlets and then storage under the seat she's got her little foot rest thingy i do you know short people problems you sometimes you need a boost i like having my feet up it's better when you got to sit for a long time and edit anyway more really fun okay then we've got more cabinets here for storage we keep like our tools and all that junk in here we've got i don't even know what to do with all of this yet to be quite honest but man it's a vast space but it's great for when we've got projects going on because we lay everything out up here and then we've got more storage and more storage and more storage and more storage and more underneath the bed behind the bed there's more cabinets that open up so we keep our whatever season it's not because this is a four season boat so we have more clothing than we've ever had before this is like now you need sweaters and bikinis not something we said before so now we keep our sweaters and stuff back there and then we can do a swap whenever the season ends air conditioning control is right here then if you look back around my office that's where you can see the controls for the smart gyro the water maker and the generator aside from having a big glorious bed queen size same as all the others we have four durade vents so that's lots of cool air coming in at nighttime it is wonderful we have two port lights on either side so you can create cross ventilation through that plus we have two hatches that we can also open up so we honestly have only had to run the air conditioner when we had the heat wave other than that so not necessary this floor lifts up and that gives me access to the bilge the sump and pump that all the gray water goes into and for the bilge while i'm talking about that there's actually dual bilge pumps so there's a backup there's two installed right next to each other here in the middle in the engine and in the aft so if one breaks you've got another one right there i thought that was really neat and it helps move water really fast if you really have a problem so dual bilge pumps who would have thought that was a thing apparently the team that built this boat thought it was a thing and i agree i like the redundancy and the smart systems for sure those were little things that we didn't know about when we bought the boat it was more things that like we uncovered and discovered as we've been getting to know the vessel okay so welcome to our head and our shower it is a nice size we have a lot of countertop space here which i'm also not used to having and i really like it because i get to stand here and i get to do my makeup and i have lots of space to do that or my hair full length mirror yeah we added that here there's another one behind it and then i've got little small mirrors we've got lots of cabinets lots of storage space i'm not showing you all that it's kind of full of all my stuff heated towel rack quiet electric flush toilet have you talked about how quiet they are they are quiet i that was we got on this boat and i was like this is the quietest toilet i have ever like it's so soft and gentle all the other toilets are usually like there's such like a tornado or like spray so much water because everything's coming out so violently and this is like it's so civilized and gentle i don't know i do like that toilet this is our shower nice big shower same exact thing with the vent that goes outside help suck all that moisture out of there it's a wonderful thing and thermostatic controller and i really like the floor it hides hair which is great and it has like really nice grip yeah it's clearly like some sort of a spray on something i don't know exactly what it is but you don't have any grout to deal with or anything else it does it is so easy to keep clean and it's got good grip which is really important when you're on a boat this is our hidden tech space room come down so this boat is considered semi-custom it's built by individual craftsmen and everything is unique to this boat so we were able to work with the friesland maritime team when we were team team when we were in limer and fortunately because we bought the boat in the netherlands where it was built we got to meet the carpenter and the people who actually did the electronics and the people who did the the hardware and the mechanical basically every little piece of this boat has a piece of that person in it and getting to hear their stories about building the struggles they had the stuff they figured out like it was such a powerful thing to meet the people who hand built this boat and you can really see that in the carpentry in the tech spaces in all the electrical layout it is done to a very high standard they take a lot of pride in their work so much pride so what's unique about this boat is it has international shore power meaning we run everything in the house anything on this boat is run through the inverters and the battery and you have a plug that can plug in it just goes straight to the master volt charger so whether it's 120 220 50 hertz 60 hertz it doesn't matter it goes straight into this charger charges the battery and then all the electronics are powered from the batteries and inverters same for the generator the generator just charges the battery shore power just charges the battery everything runs through these three master volt 4000 watt 24 volt pure sine wave inverters we can literally turn everything on and that's why when we're motoring we can run the gyro the oven the stove and make coffee run the air conditioning we have turn on everything yeah we have absolutely no problem running anything now the only downside is our battery bank is two sets of giant agm batteries it's been enough for us for the past eight months that we've owned this boat but no doubt if we were able to upgrade the lithium at some point or some other battery technology that would extend our range of living off the grid even further i don't have much to talk about down here it's all really well done that's it and then on this side is our plumbing we have filtration before it goes into the water pump and then from the water pump it goes into a uv sterilizer and then from there it gets distributed to the entire house so when you're taking a shower you're taking a shower in seawater going through a sand filter going through a water maker going through a filter going through a uv thing so everything it's such pure pure water you have zero concerns ever yeah really big pump it just it's a beast everything is like what you would expect to see in a 60 or 70 foot super yacht or really high-end trawler the spaces are the only thing you wouldn't and not that i want to relive my plumbing accident but if you didn't see that video you will have missed the plumbing in here is absolutely crazy it's this thick plastic tubing but yet it has metal inside so it is super strong it's freeze resistant all of the plumbing throughout the boat is that same style of plumbing the radiator fluid and the fresh water line very robust yeah now finally to the cockpit now this is the first time anybody has seen it probably look like this because we haven't had the cushions out because it's been too wet and cold before when we were here then we went into refit mode she's been in the shed and now here she is kind of back to her original state sort of because the biggest change that we made to this cockpit was an enclosure so this area used to be open so when it rained it all just rained into here we really couldn't leave the cushions out because everything would get drenched so now we've got cover on the top which is also good for sun and we have these clear doors which we can bring down zip down that really keeps out all the wetter weather kind of makes it like a little sun deck in here even when it's cold outside this still stays really nice and warm and then now we just leave them off because we don't really need them summertime it's glorious out but having that protection being able to enclose this space has now extended our living area so we have so much more room than even what we had before and now i'm not having to deal with hauling cushions in and storing them somewhere and then bringing them back out when everything dries up again it's been really nice continuing on the storage scene we have a little barbecue thingy here which will not be used for barbecue i know right storage down there huge storage under here huge storage back here storage in here storage everywhere and then right above me you can see there's vents on both sides so there is an air gap in this ceiling and then the air gap continues through it also there's an air gap in the walls so this is a vent and there's fans inside the walls pushing air out of this vent right here and that keeps mold down it keeps corrosion down there's insulation inside the walls or on the outside so it's just incredible for hot tropic situations or freezing cold ventilation is so important and then we get into our other steering station here everything we need balancer and thrusters fu controller engine controls down here is our power cord and then here oh my gosh short story short story okay yeah this is the momentum m10 we have two batteries for it we are very excited about using it the tender situation ended up being way more complicated than we ever expected so we haven't got to put it on yet but with our friends coming even though it's only a 310 tender we're gonna cram all six of us in and we're gonna go on some adventures i promise i promise this poor motor has just been sitting and getting moved around from place to place as we motor i feel so bad so moving back we have these are the panels under the solar panels there are dimmable lights up in there which is really nice so you can really get ambience through the entire boat these little doors are so awesome they make it feel so much safer when you're out to sea and the waves are sort of rocking it also keeps seals off so actually i told nikki the other day i thought now we can actually go to the galapagos because you don't have to worry about the seals jumping on your boat and like walking through your cockpit pooping everywhere pooping pooping of course super strong ballards all welded in all one piece this is amazing and then this is a winch so when we end up tying up to a dock and there's lots of current or wind blowing us off the dock we can bring the lines in winch ourselves even closer to the dock we've seen that go wrong once before on a catamaran in a strong current it was not pretty the guy yeah anyway yeah and we step off the boat here starting right here this boat does have davits but they have some downsides they're not quite long enough to really extend for it to hit both pontoons on the tender they're also insanely wide 300 millimeters yeah which is massive so you really want the tender to touch at both davits so i don't think they were installed with a specific tender in mind clearly not it was sort of like they were put on where they could put them on and that was it they never finished out the design or the thought process with this so that is now up to us and with it being so wide it's very difficult to try to rig a system to hang a tender back here we are going to figure it out it's just been very low on the list sort of until now so now it's it's it's worked its way up to the top priority list as we've knocked all these other things off we do have a nice swim platform here that lowers down makes getting on and off the tender really nice also just a great place to dangle your feet in the water so it's nice and then even further down is this little bit that sticks out back here and there is a black bumper attached that is literally a bumper so that if you're coming up against a dock or a wall you can literally just press right into it with the boat so that way people could step right off or you could work on whatever you needed to work on so or for med mooring if you accidentally exactly or coming into a dock like this you're going to hopefully nudge up onto the pier with that or whatever else instead of with the boat directly so kind of an interesting little add-on down there something you wouldn't notice otherwise there's a little outdoor shower right there and then down below her feet that is the pop out boarding ladder or swim ladder and then there are neat little cleats welded in so it's really easy to stern tie or to tie the back end up like i've done here to the dock and then for boarding on and off so far we found that really this back little area makes it so easy to just step on and off the dock if it's a higher dock there's a little platform right over on the side that sort of becomes your other point to go from the side we do have like a gangway a passerelle yes a passerelle would be the right word for that i think but we haven't ever needed it so but we've got it should we ever need it i almost forgot to mention these because they were out of sight so out of mind but fenders fenders are such a big deal because they're freaking huge they take up a ton of storage space so this was one of the first things that we worked on getting and so these are from fender techs they are awesome they have these super strong nylon covers that are like woven in a certain way so they're extremely abrasion resistant then we've got an extra little custom cover on top with funky little design on it which i quite enjoy but they are so incredibly strong but the biggest thing is is that you can deflate them and they take up almost no space at all they fit all of them into a tub about that big all the lines all the fenders so when you're not using them they don't take up a lot of storage space show you quickly our storage spaces here this is where we keep our foil boards and the mppt controller the diesel heater and a radiator that keeps everything in this area down here warm there's also a radiator in the engine room and a radiator in the other space there our bicycles are over there ready to go because we have not figured out where to store them yet each of these lockers has indirect lighting so it is lit up really well so you can see even when it's dark this is the gyro that we just installed it's been working great can't wait to report more on that later this is also our fuel polishing system and then massive extractor fans on both sides to pull heat out of the engine room and then get it out of the boat also our galvanic isolator back there at home that don't know what a gyro is what is a gyro it is a magic box that keeps your boat from rolling as much it's basically this thing that spins constantly and it counterbalances the way the boat is moving so it acts reacts to the boat's movements to keep it more stable and we chose a gyro specifically because we are going to potentially icy areas we didn't want another thing sticking in to the water like fin stabilizers would have been great but they just add something else that could get knocked off by ice or rocks yes we are semi-displacement we had a perfect spot for it here yes the back side is a perfect spot for it it can be mounted anywhere aft of center i believe something like that yeah now the last thing is the engine room which we're technically standing in i'll show you why yeah look at the seal on that door yeah super heavy duty watertight door and watertight engine room what i like about having the engine room out here is it keeps the noises out here it keeps the smells it keeps the heat all of that it keeps out here i was wondering if it would fall off we haven't installed the little buttons yet on it it's hot enough even on super fancy yachts where they have a properly insulated engine room as soon as that door opens it's hot it gets loud and you can smell the fumes this way at least it's all outside which has its benefit it has its downsides as well because this is not a walk-in engine room you can't pause now we can see it this is not a walk-in engine room this is a crawl about engine room i can reach everything and i can tell you from the bottom of my heart this generator this is a 7k cummins is a pain it has to work on but it can be worked on the engine can be serviced and we can reach pretty much everything we just have to be creative flexible and um what's the word for it not get frustrated patient that's the word very patient this is the volvo penta d6 340 340 horsepower yes there is only one engine and we kind of went back and forth on that we've looked at kite options we've looked at electric motors we've looked at trying to fit a hybrid in here but the way this boat is there's really not space it's not set up for that and yes we could do it but it still wouldn't be perfect and i think hopefully in the next couple years battery technology will change electric motor technology will advance and maybe we can then put in a hybrid right here rip out this generator and who knows maybe get rid of this engine in five years and just have an electric motor that would be wonderful but for now this is very reliable we talked to so many fishermen so many power boaters that only have one motor and they're like what are you worried about that's how we all roll so i don't know i feel confident we're also just coastal cruising we're going to the arctic yes but until we get to svalbard we don't have a massive crossing we will always be near shore and granted it's it's nice to have a separate way to propel your boat but i feel okay with it i'm at rest with it plus we got the momentum it's like a 20 horsepower outboard we can just you know stick it on the back and make it go we will have to just jokingly sort of test that one day that one day we do have systems set up in here for safety massive strainers we have dual fuel separators and fuel filters if one gets clogged we switch it off there's actually a sensor built into the fuel filter on the engine itself so if it notices water it sends you an alarm so many safety things that are set up plus the fuel polishing plus i can shut off each of the three tanks and just fill two tanks i can move fuel about polish the fuel i feel pretty good about it there's a massive alternator on here it's the master volt alpha i believe it is the only reason we can run the gyro off of the engine because that little alternator even though it's not a lot of power pumps out so much power enough to run a gyro and not have to run the generator and that was a surprise to me you can also see there is super thick insulation throughout this entire engine bay because we are a semi-displacement boat not a full displacement boat it means that our v-shaped hole is meant to ride up and on a plane not very down in so our fuel tanks and even our water tanks are split between multiple tanks and we can move those liquids around to help balance out the boat depending on maybe where we need more or less weight depending on our sea conditions and maybe how much water or fuel we have on board and speaking of fuel i know the big question everybody wants to know is what is the fuel economy well i can't say because this is a semi-displacement boat it is incredibly efficient that was also a big draw the fact that we were pretty much 30 to 50 less fuel than so many of the other trawlers that we looked at now granted some of that is on paper they all claim oh you know 3,000 nautical mile range you can do transatlantic and that's all sort of like marketing numbers to an extent because it's perfect conditions and going at absolute turtle speed which nobody does and you don't want to do a lot of times with these motors is run them at a really like low rpm kind of loafing about you can do it but that's really not desirable you want to be at your like proper cruising speeds we are keeping a lot of numbers we're taking a lot of data and eventually later this season we will share those numbers and kind of probably break down what we can really do with this vessel as far as range and our fuel economy goes oh and jason mentioned extra propulsion yes while we have not found a perfect get home motor right solution for this we are still investigating kind of kite options and anything else out there that exists haven't found anything else yet but kites are potential still getting a lot of quotes and finding out more information but more than anything we need to get on some demo boats or find a way to get firsthand experience with it because until i've done that i'm not fully convinced that it's a great option at least for this boat so i'm on the fence but we're investigating we know that this boat is not perfect no boat is but this is a exceptionally compact 50-foot boat which means there are some tight spaces and i would say that's probably her biggest downside but because of that it's what allows the incredible livability all the open space on the inside so it felt like a worthy trade-off for us and when we were looking at boats there were a lot great options out there but they just didn't quite call to us and for whatever reason this one did and she was such like a shock by because we ended up winning that auction which we honestly didn't think was going to happen uh it's taken us a little longer to kind of move in and get started on everything yeah she is definitely the most unique boat that we have seen and i'm so so happy that we found her yeah i'm so excited to actually get out and start exploring so where are we going well we're here on the far southeast side of the uk and we're just gonna start going west and we'll see where we end up ireland scotland if we have time maybe we'll turn and go to france like who knows we could end up in like sweden by the end of the season we really honestly don't know we thought we'd start with the uk we'll figure it out we don't really have to have some big grand plan beyond that we're kind of a fly by the seat of your pants kind of people for the most part and with that i will also say this was not the full in-depth tour this is kind of like a broad overview of what i hope was everything i know we've missed stuff so if there's something you want to know more about or just something that we should do a deep dive on please do let us know in the comments that will help drive sort of the deep dives that we do in the future don't say a cookbook this tour took long enough doing a cookbook oh my god we get a lot of requests for cooking oh that's such a that's a whole different channel people oh my gosh thank you for watching i hope you enjoyed this tour of our home of our vessel that's going to take us hopefully everywhere unknown yeah yeah never plug into an outlet ever yeah it might be reaching but yes we're pretty excited about the future hopefully you can tell that and we'll see you next time bye guys
