Iran's largest port, Bandar Abbas, through which much of the country's foreign trade passes, has been almost cut off from the rest of Iran as a result of US strikes on its transport infrastructure. The Telegraph writes about this . According to the publication, over the course of a week of strikes, bridges north and west of the city were destroyed and rail service was disrupted. This significantly limited access to the aforementioned port. Bandar Abbas is considered Iran's main maritime trade hub, handling approximately half of the country's foreign trade. It is also home to the Shahid Rajaee Port, which accounts for approximately 85% of Iran's container traffic and approximately 70% of its transit trade. This port handles deliveries of industrial equipment, construction materials, agricultural products, consumer goods, as well as the export of steel, fertilizers and petroleum products. In addition, Bandar Abbas is home to Iran's main naval base, which is of strategic importance for control of the Strait of Hormuz. Former Pentagon official and Middle East expert Michael Rubin told the publication that there is growing sentiment in American military circles about the need to limit Iran's ability to use Bandar Abbas. According to him, the Pentagon considers control over this area to be one of the key factors for restoring navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz.
But The New York Times reports that Iranian strikes on American military bases in Jordan damaged several US military helicopters and injured dozens of service members. According to sources, the nature of the strikes and the scale of the damage indicate that Iran possesses a significant stockpile of missiles and has significantly improved their effectiveness. The report also claims that Iranian forces have successfully penetrated the American air defense system protecting US military installations in the region.
It is noted that Iran has struck American military bases in Jordan four times over the past five days. However, US authorities have not yet disclosed details about the extent of the damage to equipment and infrastructure, and have refrained from commenting on the media's findings. Media previously reported that the military standoff between the US and Iran is entering a new technological phase . According to Washington, Tehran is actively modernizing its missile arsenal, which could potentially reduce the effectiveness of American missile defenses and complicate the protection of strategically important US facilities in the Middle East. According to The Wall Street Journal, concerns have heightened following recent attacks, including a strike on targets in Jordan that killed two American service members. American officials believe Iran is adapting its weapons tactics to account for the capabilities of modern air defense systems. Particular attention is allegedly being drawn to new missiles capable of reaching hypersonic speeds and performing complex maneuvers during the terminal phase of their flight. According to the American side, these characteristics significantly complicate their detection and interception, even with the use of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense systems. If such assumptions are confirmed, it could indicate a further expansion of military-technical cooperation between Tehran, Moscow and Beijing and create new challenges for American and Israeli forces in the region.
The growing precision of Iranian weapons is causing additional concern. Washington believes Tehran is increasingly capable of striking the most vulnerable elements of military infrastructure and strategic facilities.
American officials also admit that external partners may have contributed to the development of Iranian technology. Among the countries that the US claims may have provided intelligence support, targeting technology, or other military solutions are China and Russia. However, no public evidence has been presented to support these allegations.
