The Colorado Avalanche have been eliminated from the playoffs and they are already making
ruthless moves. Management is firing people that they just did not see as adequate
and this entire management down to the players are disappointed with how the Avalanche lost
this series. What is up Avalanche Nation? This is Avalanche Digest, your one-stop-shop for all of
your avs news and we're going to get right into this news here for you guys but don't forget to
subscribe so you don't miss a thing coming out and comment down below what you would like to see
this direction of a team take for the future moving forward and really I want to highlight
one big thing that I think is the main story for the Avalanche's round one exit and that
it's that the power play killed them. Avalanche Forever absolutely gets it right in saying that
they had so many opportunities to win the game and quite honestly sweep the series against the
Dallas Stars and they just didn't capitalize on it. I mean the avs only score power play goals
and that's exactly the reason why we basically saw the Avalanche recently move on from Ray Bennett
their power play coach. He was announced that he was actually fired recently and I just have
nothing to say but good riddance. I mean you could tell at best he was completely outclassed.
The players weren't listening to him. He had lost the players and he just didn't know what to do
with certain players. I mean let's actually take a look at that first power play unit that ultimately
was the deciding factor in this series. I mean you have Kale McCarr and Nathan McKinnon on it as well
and Martin Netschus and a great player like Gabriel Landeskog but do you decide to use
Gabe Landeskog as his normal the thing he's done his entire career which is stand in front of the
No you don't. You put him as the right time threat which you had never done previously as a player
that hasn't played in three years. You're expecting him to his shot to just be on in the playoffs
one-timing pucks even though he's never done that in his entire entire in his entire career.
You're gonna put him as the right side one-time threat. Get fired. That's basically the only
advice I have for Ray Bennett. What a joke of a power play coach and it's ultimately the deciding
factors to why the Avalanche lost this series. I mean take a closer look at this graphic. I mean
and really you look at this. This is offensive impact by player over the course of the entire
series. The blue is good for the Avs. I mean leading the way is of course Nathan McKinnon
but you can see a lot of Avalanche players completely outclassing the Dallas Stars on the
on offense and yet they still lost this series. This graphic supports for it firmly that the
five-on-five play was not an issue for the Avalanche with the Avalanche lost this series
in special teams. Their penalty kill and their power play was not good enough and this is really
the mentality that is the best to have going into this series. The reffing was wildly inconsistent.
Yes, but it was something I like to call consistently unconsistent for both teams. So it's
really not that much of an excuse. You take a look at all the opportunities the Avs had to seal this
away. They had a power play with under two minutes left to go in game two. Didn't capitalize on it.
You lost in overtime. Four minute power play into the overtime of game three and I believe it was
about three and a half minutes going into overtime barely was even threatening and a power play with
a 2-1 lead in the third tonight like I mentioned before and you still didn't score on it and
actually earlier on in that game seven there actually was a number another four minute power
play for the Colorado Avalanche. They had I think Jamie Benn their captain had a double minor
high sticking call and then the Avs went on the power play couldn't score on it at all.
So really the power play is what ultimately lost the Avalanche's playoff hopes really this season
and that's the reason why they decided to fire their power play coach. I mean you take a look
at how they utilized it. We're going to put Arturi Lekinen in front of the net. We're not going to
put Gabe Landis-Coggs who's made a career out of doing that. We're not going to put Valerie Nichushkin
who had been doing that in Gabe Landis-Coggs absence and was doing it great. We're not going
to do either of that. Oh and that that new guy we got Brock Nelson who is one of the best bumper
players in that spot in the league for most of his entire career. We're not going to put him there
either. I mean this just screams coaching malpractice in every sense of the word and
really you can't beat all that surprise. I mean you take a look at what Joe Sakic had to say
and that it is disappointed that it ended like that. I mean really it seemed like from every
stretch they were incredibly confident with the team they put out there. You could see in the
press conference of for the season with Joe Sakic and Chris McFarland that they were both
pretty happy with how the team played and they were confident going into the series. I mean for
goodness sake Dallas was missing their top scorer and their best defenseman and you still couldn't
win in a seven game series. I mean it's just unacceptable how bad the power play was and
Joe Sakic said it himself that a different voice going into that next year may be the answer. I was
reiterating it before but you take the return of Gabe Landeskog he fires a goal he gets amazingly
on the board he looks like he never left which is the best case scenario you could have even hoped
for and you squander the opportunity. I mean it's just not what you want to see and obviously it's
a massive disappointment for almost everybody before and they know that and that's kind of
the saddest part is they're going to have to go into the summer with the knowledge that they just
didn't do well enough and ultimately it's going to be a question heading into next year
who is the power play coach number one and what other personnel changes do we see really I was
critical of Jared Bednar here I mean I would say out of all of the front office I want him to get
fired the least I think he's a great guy the players obviously love him he has done wonders
for this organization but it's time to seriously ask the question what is the shelf life for Jared
Bednar is he the right coach moving forward or are we going to have more situations where the
abs just take off games they let off the gas they look like they're not even going to play
I mean is the shelf life coming to an end for Jared Bednar I don't think he's a bad coach I
don't think his advice is bad but it seems like the players just sometimes tune them out and I
don't you hate to see that honestly and it's the same situation for probably who I'm even more
critical of is Chris McFarlane he's the Avalanche's GM and you look at the trades he made and you
look at how he set up this team for another cup this season and you can honestly appreciate it
you can say he went all in and when you have players like McKinnon and McCarr in their primes
of course you go all in but you look at what he gave up in these trades I mean Cal Ritchie the
Avalanche's best and a best prospect and a good prospect at that and a first round pick for Brock
Nelson who might not even stay I mean that's a lot and you also acquire Charlie Coyle who's on a
bad contract for a guy who's getting paid like a second line center who's really a third line
center there's some definite questions coming in with Chris McFarlane's decisions to acquire
certain players I like that he goes all in you got to remember he got both goaltenders Blackwood
and Wedgwood for this team but there are serious questions that remain whether or not he's actually
a good enough GM to actually make competent trades because it looks like for the majority
of his trades he's always overpaying or having to get the short end of the stick on that and
it's going to be a decision going forward if the Avalanche have another disappointing season
what will the situation be but we are going to cover all of that here at AvsDigest don't
forget to tune in AvsNation comment down below what you think about the current series and we
just going to keep bringing you news about possible moves possible situations with other
firings or other staff seems like everyone's going to stay put for right now but we will
update you as time goes on have a good one
