So we do this show at dinner time or supper time as I always called it growing up
We always called the evening meal supper. Did you always call dinner?
I called it supper and dinner. My nana said I think my nana said supper a lot
Both in midwestern farm country dinner was the noon meal
Really lunch was like a snack
What would you have for lunch at dinner?
You know, maybe you'd have whatever you would normally have just for a very light snack
Not even that like if you're lunch lunch was like, uh, some chips or just something light
But dinner was like the the noon meal. I think that comes from farm
Breakfast was breakfast
And then I love breakfast
But anyway, we're talking about about restaurants that we've enjoyed through the years and some that we don't frequent as much anymore and the greatness
Of these are people who could advertise I suppose
Of the cheesecake factory number one. Yep. Number one as everything
I used to go to the cheesecake factory all the time. Like when I was in high school all through college
20s like that was the go-to place because you just knew anytime you would go there you're gonna get a good meal
And bj's is another one that you discovered when you moved down
Moved here. Yeah, and I haven't been there in like six years, but it got me thinking because their menus really yeah
There was one where we near where we used to live in carolton
We're up a little farther north now, so might have to try to find another one
But anyway, our our dinner habits
In in this job are kind of weird because we're you know, we're always at work
the early evening
Um, and i'm bad about bringing stuff from home
I've tried to do a little more lately trying to mix in some salads now and then, you know
Yeah, you always bring good salads just finished a sandwich. Nothing too exciting. You know ate an apple. Yeah, I hate candy
I don't need any other sweets apples or all the all the sweet treat. I need. Yeah, you didn't bring anything
You've you haven't been eating at work very much. I think that's a conscious decision on your
I did have a little popcorn and I have my okay. So we have
Back in the creative services department. They have little candies like miniature ones. So every day I allow myself too many ones because why?
Deprive yourself completely
It doesn't mean I I don't have days where I don't eat what I want because I I do
Like I think two weeks ago
I told you I went to whole foods and I got these like donut muffins like mini ones and a pack of nine
And I ate them all
You clearly don't do that much because the fact is and viewers
notice this
That you have you have lost weight in the last there was a free-for-all. Um, training camp promo that's running from a couple of years ago
And you're like we need to update that
And I said no, I like the way it looked two years ago
I'm going in the opposite direction as you but you've just you've become very disciplined in your eating and that's and that's a tribute to
You for me. Thank you. Mike. Um, it's it's not perfect, you know
It's the last sincere thing i'll say in this 30 minutes what works for me
What's worked because of our schedule is i'm very big into intermittent fasting. I I it's worked for me
I know there's been studies that my whole thing is different things work for different people
So if I do intermittent fasting, maybe that doesn't work for you because you know, we're just used to different things
When I when i'm hungry i'll eat but that's been my thing and I think it's worked. Um, and I
I try to eat whole foods because I think those are filling. Um, I love greek yogurt
Like and that has a ton of protein in it
So I try to eat things that keep me filled but as you know, I have my days where I break down here
I'm like f it i'm gonna go to the the break room and get
Treats and everything else and that is my weakness among many is I don't really snack when i'm at home
But here it's hard not to just kind of our job, you know, we sit around a lot. There's there's time between shows and stuff
What's a guy gonna do go down the hall see what our editor friend yacob has
There's always sweets around. I have a terrible sweet tooth, but
I need to just stick with engineer tom's popcorn. He is like a real movie theater popcorn type machine
Fresh popcorn every day. That's all we need a couple of servings of that good fiber 20 of this h2o
Uh popcorn has fiber so it keeps movement, uh in the body if you know what i'm saying and then that's
Become kind of a theme of the show as you'll
discover
in a moment
Fiber you think it's important to you now?
Wait a couple of years. What am I waiting for?
How about that world cup
Anyway world cup final is set feel like i'm around my brothers
Spain argentina sunday at two on fox france england in the third place game, which again I think is weird
My mom texted me. She goes. Why are they playing those two teams? Aren't gonna want to play like mom. It's different. It's
Pride of the nation. They're still gonna get out there and will the frontline players play in that landry?
Do you know have you paid enough attention in the past? They will okay. Well good for them
I mean, it would be hard to play. It would be difficult but
You got to just put it out of your mind
Spain argentina, we know that you pick spain before the tournament started. So obviously you're going to pick them in the final
I'm going to pick argentina not just to be contrary
But I I think hard to bet against them story will continue to be written of messi and I could see it happening and
Peter whelpton our world cup analyst breaks it down here in a moment and he sees a game unfolding that could be really
tight close to the vest
not many shots throughout
Both teams can kind of operate in that way for different reasons to hear peter say it
I could see it coming down to a messy goal
in
In stop in stoppage time that would be just like argentina to decide it because it's happened
In the last four knockout stage matches, um, they've done that they haven't led through 90 minutes of play so
I like how peter described argentina as being chaotic because that to me is the polar opposite of the spain team. That's just kind of
Calm cool collected and steady and they play a true
team game earlier this afternoon there was a
little short piece on messi and
I didn't realize this but there was a time where spain was gunning for him to be on their national team
And then because argentina really didn't know about him. He was playing for barcelona and he was kind of unknown
In his home nation of argentina, which is so hard to believe but it never quite happened
But just to think that that was actually a possibility and of course
He's so well versed with a bunch of guys from spain eight of the players on spain play for barcelona. So yeah
All right, the peter whelpton serious soccer stuff's coming up in a moment
But we had some fun with peter before
We kind of knew that we were rolling here and recording and landry was recording it and it's just it's a behind the scenes
Look, i'm gonna pull back the curtain as to some of the fun
We have with our guests from time to time, especially a guy like the great peter whelpton. Here we go
Hey, hey, hey
Hey guys. Yeah. Oh, there we go. Hey peter
I was singing and everything you missed it. Oh, well
There'll be another time. Would you sing some more please peter? Can you hear me?
This needs to be its own show
Mike just likes to hear himself in the microphone because he likes the way the sound he's like in his ear
These mics are fantastic
These are like the mics those whatever those re 20s or whatever they use it at the ticket, you know
That really make everything sound really good. Like bob stern is is an alto in real life is his voice. No, i'm just kidding
We kid i'm doing one to three tomorrow with mino peter it should be quite a
Couple of hours from the card show and alan at the marionette there
So looking forward to that tell the story when uh, messy checked you out on the sidelines. That's a great story
Given the fact that it wasn't me and you know, damn well, it wasn't me it was sam and and david centenri a news reporter
So yeah, i'm really i'm gonna tell the story now and with this bitter tone of voice I have right now
Mino you want to you want to know a story indicative of our coverage at fox for it?
funny story
32 years at the station one time on the sideline. Isn't that funny? That's good
Peter's like get me out
I can do this every day. All right, here we go. Oh
Ready
Are you ready?
My mood swings even frighten me sometimes peter they really do is it warm in here or is it just menopause is hard
Yeah
Because for the first time in five weeks peter, uh, our our normal off days are happening
We have our normal off days tomorrow and saturday
Me landry and mike all have the same days off. Mm-hmm. That's good good times
So we're all going to six flags tomorrow, it's gonna be fun are you gonna ride the ride
Oh heck no, I wouldn't I I have no interest in going on any of those roller coasters
Mike are you gonna ride the tormenta?
I can't handle that stuff anymore. You still love them. Do you like it? Peter?
The last time you rode a really scary ride
Uh, that isn't a euphemism, I mean literally
Uh, my wife and I went to disneyland a couple summers ago and I rode the the incredibles one
Which was pretty intense actually I was pretty you know
I used to hate roller coasters and then I got older and I said eff it what I gotta lose and I started riding the
roller coasters and I think that tormenta one
might actually, um, you know
That looks ridiculous in person when my girls were literally a bridge to go to disney world
And I did I like the rock and roller coaster. That was it wasn't really herky-jerky, but that tower of terror
that thing
With this great drop that too. That was I went on one
I've only been on one roller coaster. It was years ago
When my mom's dad my grandpa took us all to six flags all my cousins
I went on one roller coaster and never again never doing tea cups
It wasn't no it was it was like a medium-sized one, but it was I did not like it
I freaked out
some of these you've got to
You just I mean not to get graphic, but you just have to make sure the depends are are securely fast
I'd rather go can really be difficult the people behind you could be in for some nasty things
I'd rather go cage diving with great whites. Oh, is that right? Yeah. Well, you're a water
creature of the water
Did uh deon's uh commercials sell you on depends?
Oh
They were a part of my life long before that peter, all right, here we go. We're about ready to go
That is called a behind the scenes look if you have ever seen one
hashtag edgy hashtag
Unscripted right there. This is kind of the fun. We have with the tickets peter welton. He's our world cup
Analyst and we'll get down to the nuts and bolts of that spain argentina final coming up next
Back with us from the ticket and the kick around is our world cup analyst peter welton
He's been with us throughout the tournament just a few more days to go now peter as this thing
Comes to a dramatic close
All i'm hearing is about how england blew that lead. It wasn't so much anything argentina did it was just england went into a shell
And it's all the manager's fault and that's why they lost that semi-final set us straight on that. What happened?
Well, it's a little all those things can be true at the same time, but I I think there's a reason why
thomas tuchel is getting a lot of blame today is because the reason why england hired thomas tuchel was to
Prevent that exact situation because england had found themselves in
The same scenario so many times in tournament games over the last multiple decades where they take a lead
And then ultimately concede it and the last previous manager southgate caught all kinds of hell in the last world cup in 2018
When they took a lead against croatia and he started going super defensive
And changed his players in ways that everybody disagreed with and so when they hired tuchel they were like, oh this guy
He's got it screwed together. He knows exactly what to do in these situations
And yesterday he just simply did the opposite of what everybody thought he would do
And began to cede a lot of space to argentina who thrive on chaos and really know how to manipulate
Manipulate and maximize those opportunities
And of course messy, you know
The crazy part about the second goal
Is that nico o'reilly and I think jed spence actually do a pretty good job of blocking off his left foot and forcing him
To the right and then what does he do? He puts in the inch perfect cross off of his weaker foot
And game over
Yeah, it was it was musty tv the other day all of us watching that one
Peter span spain dominating france the other day at the big stadium in arlington
Which is now being brought back to its old self. Uh, the grass is coming off as we speak
Just your final thoughts on what you saw
Uh from that match
Well now he had to make me sad. They're taking the grass
Sorry, why did you go and do that? That's a bummer man
Uh, I I I think that game was equally interesting but for a very different reason just simply because I think a lot of us had
Uh started to count spain out myself included simply because their tournament has been driven by being so good defensively
and um
And so france being such an uh attacking firepower the entire tournament
I just don't think any of us were really prepared for how that game was going to go on
But i'm just telling you in the same way we uh rave about argentina taking advantage of england's submission yesterday
Spain put on one of the finest individual team performances i've ever seen in a world cup game their defensive
uh
combinations and collective
work and effort to try to keep france at bay just was
a sight to behold I know it may not have made for a crazy interesting game for a lot of people but
Um, I found it fascinating and I really don't have any idea how this final is going to go because you've got one team in
Spain that is that kind of masters control and wants to own the ball
Versus another team that this tournament has been really thriving off
Chaos and digging and grinding out wins and I I have honestly no real clear idea who's going to win this
With that said let's look at the final
Uh, it's it's dangerous to ask the question in the way i'm about to ask it because argentina has made a living pulling games out late
But is there anything early in the match peter that we should look for that might give us some clue as to how this thing
Might be trending or unfolding
Yeah, you know
I think it's interesting to go back and look at argentina and what they did in the first half against england
Which was essentially just kill the game by repeatedly fouling
England and testing the referee to see how far they he would let them go
uh in that role and what happened was is that we ended up with the
We ended up the first half of that game with 19 fouls and no shots on goal
In the first half of that game and to put that into perspective
There were 23 fouls in the entirety of the spain france game
So argentina went into that with a very clear mindset of we're just going to gum this thing up for as long as we want
to
And that's probably what we're going to end up seeing I think in the game against spain is they're going to try to figure out
How they can compress this game and down into a single half
And they'll do that by just trying to break up
Break up play and keep spain
Who by the way is just going to try to hold the ball themselves
Anyway, there's a chance the first half of this game is a total snoozer
Unless something really interesting happens like spain gets a very early pk
Like they begin to get against france or some other really weird incident like somebody gets a red card and thrown out early
So that is probably how I think it'll play out
uh, at least initially
peter, of course the big headline too that everyone's been talking about you've seen that iconic photo would be
Messi versus laminia mall 19 years ago. They were in a charity
Calendar event that photo was taken and now they'll be facing each other for the first time ever on the pitch
I mean, this is why sports are sports, right?
I mean, I mean just the storylines. Could you ever have imagined that something like this would even happen?
no, it's funny that that photo's actually been floating around for quite some time and and
Uh, we've all marveled at it like everybody else, but now here is the exact moment it comes to life
I I haven't finished my generative ai version of this between you and doocy, but i'll i'll get there
I just haven't figured out who's bathing
Um
Anyway, uh, yeah, it's a it is a crazy reality
that they both were at the same kind of at the club at the same time and or the area at the same time and
Messi ends up taking that photo and it was all very very random
There's a really interesting interview out
Uh, if you want to find it with the photographer that set that whole thing up
And what a small world a small world for that to uh to find ourselves now in this place on sunday
Are you gonna predict a winner on on your radio show saturday?
Have you decided which team that will be sure we will we we've been doing predictions the entire time most of mine stink. Um,
Uh, I I like I said a minute ago. I i've been thinking about this all day
I don't know
I can think of scenario where spain just suffocates argentina so much and argentina's so tired because they've been expending themselves in ways
You know, there's a whole weird side story about how spain has gotten to this final
playing a system that allows them to be very efficient in the amount of energy they expend and
They've literally played every game of the world cup with the exception of one in either an indoor stadium or a temperature friendly stadium
And so they haven't had to really expose themselves to the heat and humidity
So now they're going to new york and new jersey where it's going to be a summer day
And I can't figure out if that benefits them or if they're not
Acclimatized to the heat yet if that's going to be a negative against them
so that's a weird little intangible that uh, we may see how it plays out, but
Listen to the radio show on the pregame show on sunday
I'll probably have my prediction decided by then at least I hope I do. I thought the atmosphere in inside
Dallas stadium which r.i.p to that back to jerry world. I thought the atmosphere inside the stadium for those matches was incredible
Just what are your your final takeaways from from what it was like to be inside there for the world cup
it was everything I had hoped it would be and more and really the thing that I I
I truly believe the big takeaway out of this is just how successful we were as a host
For the world cup again. I know i've prattled on about this with you guys and with lauren in the morning show
You know, we as a soccer community as a sports
Community should be really proud of the fact that dallas fort worth has been part of 15 world cup games
Over the course of two world cups and that puts us at the top of the echelon
of cities across the globe that have gotten to do that and so
The way that you know
Really some of my favorite things that are going to come out of this are all the social media videos of people
Who came to texas came to north texas ate our food hung out at the hotels?
Walked around and we're like wow, this place is amazing. People are so nice and the food is so good
and they had a blast and so I
That to me really is the big
Win in many ways out of how this whole thing went down for us and i'm i'm really proud of it
And i'm proud of you guys, too. We're proud of you. We thank you so much
We're hoping still to talk to you one more time after the final though
That's how we got to close things out. It's only right
Just one more time and then i'll go back into my coffin and you won't see me again
You do the kick around, uh, will you do one saturday as well or
Pre-game, we're doing our full two. We're doing our full two-hour show saturday
We're doing a two-hour pre-game sunday at noon to two
We'll come back immediately after the game is over for an hour
And uh a breaking news. We just decided today. We will do a wrap-up kick around
Monday night with lars before he gets out of play and goes back to uh,
Europe and so yeah, and then we'll probably take a little bit of time off because we're sweeping
We'll hope to get you in here sunday night at 10 to wrap it up as well. Peter whelpton
Yeah, thank you. Appreciate it. Thank you
Bye guys
We'll be on a little late on our tv show instead of 10 30 is probably closer to 11 tonight a little more world cup talk
Star schedules out we'll get into that a little bit wings game postponed. Yeah weird. Well, yeah, very weird thing
Get into that absolutely but uh much more tonight probably 11-ish. We'll see you then
