Ukraine says it has launched a new phase of its campaign against Russia’s shadow fleet, claiming drone strikes on 20 vessels during overnight operations in the Black Sea on July 15. According to the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces, SOF, the targets included 17 oil tankers, two LNG carriers, and one tugboat. The operation, codenamed “MoLoCHKa,” was announced on Ukrainian Statehood Day and is described as an expansion of previous efforts to disrupt maritime logistics supporting Russia’s energy exports. Ukrainian military further claimed that 136 shadow fleet vessels have been struck since July 6, including 116 ships in the Sea of Azov and 20 vessels in the Black Sea. The units involved in the operation were the 9th “Kairos” Battalion of the 414th Separate Brigade “Madyar’s Birds,” the 1st SBS Operations Center, 20th Separate SBS Brigade “K-2,” 412th Separate SBS Brigade “Nemesic,” 427th Separate SBS Brigade “Rarog,” 413th SBS Detachment “Raid”. The “shadow fleet” refers to aging tankers and other commercial vessels that Russia is used to transport oil while circumventing Western sanctions and price-cap restrictions.
