The restoration of this forgotten Dutch portrait continues.
In this second episode, the young woman's face slowly begins to emerge from beneath centuries of oxidized varnish. As the old coating is carefully removed, her true complexion, delicate features and the remarkable skill of the original artist gradually come back to life.
But conservation is rarely a straightforward process.
While uncovering the portrait, I discovered areas where the fragile paint layer had become unstable and was at risk of being lost forever. Before continuing the cleaning, the painting first had to be carefully consolidated to ensure that every original brushstroke could be preserved safely.
Only then could the restoration continue.
As more of the varnish disappears, the dramatic transformation becomes increasingly evident. Colours regain their original depth, subtle modelling reappears, and the personality of the sitter begins to emerge after remaining hidden for centuries.
This is only the second chapter of a much larger conservation journey. More discoveries still lie beneath the aged varnish, and in the next episode we will continue revealing the remainder of this remarkable portrait.
