This 19th-century portrait spent much of its later life sitting in storage before finally finding a new owner. Unfortunately, time hasn’t been kind. The canvas has suffered a major impact, the tacking edges are badly worn, and decades of dirt and discoloured varnish have hidden much of the painting beneath.
Welcome to this deep dive series. In this episode we assess the condition, begin the conservation treatment and prepare the portrait for what will become a complete structural rebuild. We will continue the restoration over the next few weeks, cleaning the painting and discovering who the sitter is and hopefully we will find the artist.
