The restoration of this forgotten Dutch portrait continues in Part 3 as the artist's signature is finally uncovered beneath more than 300 years of oxidized varnish.
In this third episode, an exciting discovery is finally made: the artist's signature emerges from beneath centuries of oxidized varnish, revealing that the portrait was painted by Dutch Golden Age artist Isaac Paling.
Isaac Paling (c. 1640–1728) was a Dutch Golden Age portrait painter best known for his elegant portraits and his delicate treatment of faces and luxurious fabrics.
As the old varnish is carefully removed, the young woman's face continues to emerge in all its original beauty. Her true complexion, delicate features, and the remarkable quality of the artist's brushwork slowly come back to life after remaining hidden for more than three centuries.
But conservation is rarely a straightforward process.
During the cleaning, I discovered areas where the fragile paint layer had become unstable and was at risk of being lost forever. Before the restoration could continue, these areas first had to be carefully consolidated to ensure that every original brushstroke could be preserved safely.
As the old varnish disappeared, numerous old abrasions and paint losses also became visible, revealing that a long and meticulous retouching process still lies ahead.
With the painting stabilized, the cleaning could continue.
As more of the oxidized varnish is removed, the transformation becomes increasingly evident. Colours recover their original depth, subtle modelling returns, and the elegant character of the sitter gradually emerges once again.
Although an important milestone has now been reached with the discovery of the artist's identity, the restoration is far from complete. In the next episode, we will continue uncovering the beauty of this remarkable seventeenth-century portrait and prepare it for the extensive retouching work that still awaits.
