As we move forward in the process of development, discovery, and creation of who and what we are
and do, it can be immensely valuable to take some time to consider what the end result of all of
this creation will look like. Envisioning what the end is from the beginning is a valuable tool
and a worthwhile exercise to employ on a regular basis as a form of self-evaluation.
Caution should be exercised, though, so that we're realistic in our preparation and anticipation
of and for the future. There are times when it is absolutely appropriate to think outside the box
and assume the best-case scenario. There are also occasions when a more cautious approach with
precise and cautious optimism will be advisable. As we start progressing toward actively developing
and enhancing ourselves, specific, achievable, achievable, and sustainable small steps should
The main point here is that purposeful creation, intentional adjustment,
specific targeting of an end outcome needs to be measured, specific, sustainable, and planned.
Knowing the end, or more specifically planning the end, planning the final outcome, the end result,
is something that takes time and takes mental energy and mental focus and planning.
The second thing is to complete a mental exercise. It's often recommended in a successful
retreat. Imagine for a few minutes that you're attending your own funeral or perhaps
maybe start a little bit earlier. Sure, we can start with the very, very end and imagine and
think through what we hope people will say at our funeral for our eulogy and how they will act and
what impacts we will have made in their lives and brings everyone to tears. And perhaps starting at
the very end isn't what most of us need. Let's start much earlier than that. How about this week?
Let's consider what the end of this week will look like. What is it that you're attempting
to accomplish this week? What will you, what will you, what will your next week look like?
So for me, right now, I've just completed sitting at my desk typing, having just given a lecture to
a group of third and fourth year dental students. By one week from now, I hope to see that I have
finished writing the remainder of my second book, but that isn't super realistic. So I'll say that
my actual goal will be able to get an additional 4,000 words completed in the book this week.
As I think about this goal, this vision, this plan, I need to focus my mind as I begin to consider the
actual accomplishable steps required to get to that point. Let's say 4,000 words in seven days.
That breaks down to about 600 words per day. That's doable, but I can't stop there. I've got
to detail out to a deeper level than that. 600 words per day, but when will I be able to do that?
What time, what location, and how will I carve that time out? Perhaps I work through that goal
all in one day or maybe two. Ultimately, the details are now up to me to plan, up to me to execute.
I can have a goal floating around in my mind until the calendars come up, until they don't,
but until the goal is actually written down, really planned into my calendar to the point
where I'm physically, specifically, and intentionally setting aside the time that
will be required, the goal will only be a wish, a dream, a hope. True power behind creation is
manifest in the details that add up to the steps that add up to the accomplishment of the goal.
The power is in the details. The details yield the results. It is in the management of details
that we affect, we control, we manifest creation, we create our future.
Mentally, we can envision and foresee and create, but the power really lies in that specific,
actionable task that we decide on, the details that we develop diligently into outcomes.
So just now we looked at a week and we took one simple creative goal and broke it down.
Once I've entered the planned time into my calendar and committed to actually doing it,
I can move on to the next stepping stone, the next vista in my life. I can begin building it
on goals that are from the same end vision or I can start working on parallel goals. Those things
are happening at the same time, that are happening at the same time as the other items. All of these
things can be accomplished in increments or in leaps or in chunks or in steps. The point here
is that we need to be meticulous enough, granular enough to break down the vision through the
process of mental design to its component parts and work toward accomplishing those parts in a
planned and orderly way. These principles are pretty well suited to personal adjustments and
business adjustments. It comes down to mental creation, mental design, and creating an actual
design through careful planning and specific attention as needed to goals and choices.
As we're accomplishing small things, small control over our lives, we can also begin to
accomplish large things, larger trajectory adjustments of our individual current location
and pathways. Envisioning the outcome ahead of time and mentally designing the steps in a very
specific way that will lead us toward the goal insofar as we are willing to continue forward
in focus and in faith that we can accomplish the end result we have hoped and planned for,
invested in, and now caused to come forth in our lives.
