It is the hottest ticket in town. Daytona Beach's iconic Jackie Robinson
ballpark held its grand reopening tonight after a multimillion dollar
makeover and Fox 35 Manny Martinez is joining us live from the ballpark
tonight. So Manny, it was completely sold out despite the heat tonight.
Yeah, you know what? Low and we did get a little bit of a breeze which helped
out as we moved in deeper into the evening. But look, this was a date on
the calendar that team leadership has circled. This was when they wanted to
fully reopen and they made it right here too. There you go guys. It was the
hottest ticket in town and they lined up at every entrance to prove it. I
think it's really exciting just to be here. We came all the way from West
Virginia to be here tonight. On this night, the Daytona Tortuga celebrate
the grand reopening of Jackie Robinson ballpark, a shrine to Robinson and a
shrine to the game. It's where Jackie broke baseball's color barrier during
spring training in 1946 open since 1914. It's the oldest active ballpark in all
of the minor leagues. It's the Jackie Robinson baseball park. It's
significant history and it's part of our black history. It's grown up so
nicely over the years. Since then, 18 months and $30 million later, there's a
new chapter in the stadium's history headlined now by swanky suites with the
teen store and what will be a museum in right field plus massive upgrades to
the clubhouse and other facilities for the players and a beautiful river walk
along the Halifax featuring a brand new party deck. I think it's awesome. It's
like going from from the minor leagues to the major leagues. This is very nice
over here, but I missed the authentic traditional look. I think it changed
really good. I love it. It makes it a whole new stadium without the fans. You
know, there is no baseball here. Jack Robinson ballpark. So it's great to
hear. Certainly a team effort, as I've said, and really, really excited for
even more things to come. Called by history $5 tickets and the giveaway of
hawaiian shirts. The almost 4000 fans braved friday's heat for a fun night at
the park. I asked my dad to buy me a lot of different drinks to stay cool and
sometimes I just hope that there's a breeze
finishing touches at the ballpark are still ongoing. Also still ongoing. Is
this ball game? It started five minutes after 6 30. We're almost at four hours.
There's supposed to be a firework show after the game. We got that in the
third inning when there were 16 combined runs a good minor league game
tonight. Live in Daytona Beach. Many Martinez Fox 35 News.
