El Nino is powering up in the Pacific when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration now predicts an 81 percent chance El Nino will become very strong by fall.
NOAA believes it will rank among the most intense El Ninos ever tracked.
An arrival would happen in 1997 when 23,000 people died in weather disasters that cost
global governments billions. El Nino's biggest impacts include droughts, downpours, heat waves,
could raise the odds of dramatic new climate records over the next year.

And one of the most likely impacts for our area will be more so once the upcoming winter arrives.
We tend to get wetter than normal conditions during El Nino and that could be amplified
even more during a potentially super or strong El Nino. Now that's a live view at LAX where we've
seen right along the coast some stubborn clouds this afternoon but just a few miles inland it's
and even farther inland lots of sunshine lots of heat as well. Let's first though just start
right here with the typical winter El Nino pattern. I'm pointing out winter because that's
when there's more of an impact on our weather patterns here in the U.S. and what we typically
see is the storm track lined up more so across the southern U.S. This green area right here
indicates where it's usually wetter than normal during the winter time. That would include us here
in southern California but you may have noticed there northern California tends to be drier than
normal during El Nino winters. We'll be watching it as that time approaches. In the meantime it's
all about the heat. We have heat alerts extending through next week. It actually looks like it will
get hotter next week and a little more humid which will make the heat wave even more dangerous.
Spotty rain is possible though Sunday and into Monday once we start getting some of that moisture
coming in. We'll look at that in a second as well. So we've got these widespread heat alerts
advisories and warnings again going into next week for different regions. It's issued for
different reasons at different temperature ranges. Notice this portion of LA on the coast side of
the five we have a heat advisory because of temperatures that might get up to the low to
mid 90s. Then 95 to 105 is possible for some of the valleys the inland empire. That's kind of hot
in some of the mountains as well. Then we get to next week and our current advisories switch to a
extreme heat watch for Tuesday through Thursday of next week. Meaning we may see some combination
of heat advisories and extreme heat warnings in this area for Tuesday through Thursday of next
week. Basically it's a long duration heat wave. We're pretty hot now. We come down a couple
degrees this weekend and we bring it up to even hotter temperatures next week. Tomorrow in the
sunshine and 80s for LA in the afternoon. 70s right along the coast and again farther inland
we've got the heat. There's a look at the highs across the entire area. You see the valleys and
the inland empire. 90s will be common. Maybe we hit 100 somewhere in the mix there. Switching it
to Saturday the numbers come down slightly but it's still very hot inland and then we go to
Sunday and it's going to be very similar to Saturday. So again we got those 90s for the
valleys the ie otherwise a lot of 80s from LA down through Orange County and of course cooler
at the coast. High pressure is over us. That's why we're hot. It's going to be with us through
Friday. Backs off to the east this weekend which allows moisture to come in on the back side of it
and the result could be a couple of showers or storms. Here's a look at future cast going through
the day tomorrow. Let's take you to Saturday. You're going to see the clouds build in probably
a partly to mostly cloudy day on Saturday but really watch Sunday here. You'll see with the
result of some of that moisture coming through a few showers or storms may drift through especially
our eastern areas and especially over some of the mountains and that could continue into Monday as
well. Temperature trend now for the next seven days. The highs for LA and Inland Orange County.
So we're very warm. We're down a few degrees this weekend. You see those temperatures up around 90
middle of next week for the coast. Again not too bad here in the 70s and then finally the valleys
the Inland Empire down a few degrees this weekend back up around 100 next week. We're back right
after this break.
