The Financial Times reports that Ukraine is striking Russian energy infrastructure at an unprecedented rate. Since the beginning of 2026, Russian oil refineries have been hit at least 194 times —11 times more than during the same period last year. "Ukraine has made a technological breakthrough that has allowed it to produce more long-range drones and increase overall mass production," said Stefan Meister of the German Council on Foreign Relations. In May alone, analysts at Rochan Consulting recorded 16 successful strikes on Russian oil refineries, a historic monthly record. According to the FT, Russia has data on the interception of at least 64,000 Ukrainian drones in the first six months of 2026 over its territory and eastern Ukraine. Almost half of these reported interceptions occurred in the last two months: 14,195 drones in May and 17,832 in June. Even if these data are coming from Moscow, they demonstrate the scale of the strain on Russian air defenses. The data obtained indicate that the intensification of Kyiv's air campaign is placing unprecedented strain on Russian air defenses, greatly complicating Moscow's ability to protect the critical energy and military resources that sustain its war machine. Russia is forced to expend significant resources on strengthening its air defenses, but it will struggle to produce sufficient systems and interceptors. The air strike campaign is already hitting Russian refineries, logistics, warehouses, military facilities, and energy sectors. It is also shattering the Kremlin's illusion that the war can be fought far away, unaffecting everyday life in Russia.

According to the FT, Ukraine has sharply escalated attacks on the Russian energy sector in 2026.
