The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the second-largest fish in the world, surpassed only by the whale shark. Despite its massive size—reaching lengths of up to 8 meters—this gentle giant is completely harmless to humans. It is a filter feeder, slowly swimming near the ocean’s surface with its enormous mouth wide open to strain plankton, small fish, and zooplankton through its gill rakers. Found in temperate oceans worldwide, basking sharks are often seen “basking” at the surface, which gives them their name. Their calm nature and prehistoric appearance make them one of the most awe-inspiring creatures of the open sea.
