The Pompeii worm (Alvinella pompejana) is one of the most extreme animals on Earth, living on the walls of deep-sea hydrothermal vents in the Pacific Ocean. Found at depths of around 2,500 meters, it survives in temperatures that can exceed 80°C (176°F), making it one of the most heat-tolerant animals known to science. Its body is covered with a fleece-like layer of symbiotic bacteria that helps insulate it from intense heat and toxic chemicals released by the vents. While its tail end endures scorching conditions near superheated water, its head remains in cooler seawater—creating a remarkable balance that allows life in a seemingly uninhabitable environment.
