The Mailed Butterflyfish or the Reticulated Butterflyfish(Chaetodon Reticulatus)
The mailed butterflyfish (Chaetodon reticulatus), also known as the reticulated butterflyfish or black butterflyfish, is a striking reef species found across the Indo-Pacific, especially around coral-rich island reefs. Its body is dark brown to black, overlaid with a fine reticulated (net-like) pattern formed by lighter-edged scales. A bold black band runs through the eye, while the dorsal and tail fins often display soft yellow tones that contrast with the darker body. This species typically grows to about 15–18 cm (6–7 inches) and inhabits coral reefs, lagoons, and reef slopes. It feeds mainly on coral polyps, algae, and small invertebrates, often seen swimming in pairs as they move gracefully among corals.
