The Pearlscale Butterflyfish or Philippines Chevron Butterflyfish (Chaetodon Xanthurus)
The pearlscale butterflyfish (Chaetodon xanthurus), also known as the yellow-tailed or crosshatch butterflyfish, is a beautifully patterned species found across the Indo-Pacific, particularly around Southeast Asia and the Philippines. Its body is pale white to silvery, covered with a delicate crosshatched pattern formed by dark-edged scales, giving it a “pearlscale” appearance. A bold black band runs through the eye, while the bright yellow tail provides a striking contrast. The dorsal fin may also show subtle darker shading, adding depth to its look. This species typically grows to about 12–15 cm (5–6 inches) and inhabits coral reefs, lagoons, and reef slopes. It feeds mainly on coral polyps, algae, and small invertebrates, often seen swimming in pairs or small groups among coral formations.
