AI GeneratedLing Chi from Oriental Art Supply demonstrates how to paint a lotus on pre-mounted barley paper. The tutorial covers the selection of specialized brushes, a sophisticated color-mixing strategy to achieve vibrancy and transparency, and the step-by-step process of layering leaves, buds, and flowers to create a balanced, elongated composition.
This is Ling Chi, Brush Painting for Beginners from Oriental Art Supply, and today's topic is
lotus. It's a little bit more challenging than usual, the composition-wise. The elements are
still the same because we're trying to paint a much larger piece than what we have been doing.
So this is pre-mounted board, and we have had it in the stock for a while, so it's well-seasoned,
very easy to work with as far as moisture control. So we're going to do lotus, which usually is a
pretty big challenge for most beginners. So I hope you can learn a few things from
today's session. We have chosen this book as our inspiration, called Drawing Lotus. It's a
collection of different artists, only in lotus, which is the iconic subject in Chinese brush
painting. And we chose this particular one. It's not because it's better than anything else, but
it fits our size of our paper, which is elongated. And the three brushes I'm going to use, which is
three-inch wash brush, I'm going to use for some large petal of leaves, and full lotus. And then
to help me to do finishing some leaves, the area which the three-inch may be a little bit too
cumbersome to work with. And then the lotus petal for us to use some smaller area, and as well as
the flower. So we named these brushes thinking about it's a good brush to do lotus. So three-inch
wash brush, full lotus for leaves, and then lotus petal for the flowers. So we have quite a few
colors than usual. Actually, it's the kind of color we use, it's not as many, but because the lotus
takes so much area to paint, so we need a lot of paint. So it looks more, but it's not that much
more. So this is the coral white, which we have here, and green, which we use, chunk yellow with
indigo, indigo chips, sky blue chips, and then these are the bath bottle ink. So these are the
leaves. And then to accent how to use the stone green and stone blue, we also have the stone green
in the jar, and then the stone blue in the jar, which I didn't take it out directly from the
jar. I used the stone blue with the sky blue to mix. So you'll see the color is more vibrant
and more transparent. And now I use stone green with green to mix this color. So this is the trick
that you can learn from today's lesson, because that will make it so much prettier with just
straight out of the jar. And then I have crimson chips and rose chips for the flower.
And then we got this, what do we call the name of the color? This is barley pre-mounted paper.
Okay, barley pre-mounted paper. It's a raw paper, but because we only have some, a few
package left, so if you want to buy them, I would suggest you do it right now, because
it's been in our possession for a while. So the paper is very seasoned, so very stable to paint
with. So let's get started. So I will load my, add some yellow too, my chunk yellow,
load about, I would say a good one third, and then blend, and then about a quarter
with the green. So make sure they are nicely blend and soft.
So make sure they are overlapped. So I'm using my full lotus brush to finishing this tip.
So this will give me a nice shape of the lotus, the bottom side.
So now I'm going to use still the same full lotus brush. I'm going to do the center of the leaf.
So I will load the stone blue with a little sky blue with indigo mix,
and then pick up some ink, glass bottle ink, and mixed. So here's my tip of finishing.
Little green with sky blue, stone blue with sky blue, and a little indigo on the tip,
and then a bit ink.
Pink, stone blue, tip with the sky blue, blend.
And then I'm going to use a little of this brush to do the center of my leaves.
Okay, so I'm going to use a little ink, blend it with the maroon chip to get my brown,
and then a tip with the ink to finishing the edge of mine.
All right, so this is my top of them. To show you how to use the accent of the green,
stone green. So we have the stone green mixed with a little bit green. So we will accent some of this.
All right, so then we will do the bottom leaf. So start with the yellow with the green,
indigo, and some ink, and blend.
Okay, add more indigo, a little ink in the middle. All right, and then I'm going back on my
wash brush. Some yellow, a little white, and green. Now we're going to do our
white and green, and a little indigo. Okay, I'm going back on my full lotus brush
with some indigo and ink to finish up some of the shape. And this is my center of them.
All right, and then there's a little leaf here. We're going to use the full lotus brush.
Yellow with the green, and some stone blue with the sky blue. So we're going to do.
Okay, and then some brown, yellow, brown, and then ink. So I'm soften some of these edges
when I'm using the other brush. Okay, and then I'm also going to use a little baby leaves here
to host my flower. Green with stone green, and then with the ink in the middle. All right,
so then we're ready for our flowers. So this time we're going to use the lotus petal.
We're going to do the bud first. So we top, we first load the white, and we wash the tip off.
And then we are, the second color is the crimson, and then the rouge. So then we're going to do a
flower here. So white again, wash off with the tip, load the crimson, and then the
rouge.
Crimson with the rouge, wash off a little white with crimson and rouge. Okay, I'm going to use
my lotus petal brush, wash it off, add some yellow with the green for the center. Okay,
now we're going to make the stem, make it coming back to the roots. So we have a little bit
vermilion with the green. So first we're going to connect the flowers with the
leaves. So this one coming back here, and then we're going to have this center going through
the leaf. And this will be coming off the leaves, and then this will be connected with here.
And then here is the center of this leaf. And then this is going to connect it with this
leaf. And this leaf coming here, and then there, and then.
All right, so we finished our lotus on pre-mounted barley colored board.
