Smith’s butterflyfish (Chaetodon smithi) is a rare and lesser-known species found in the western Indian Ocean, particularly around Sri Lanka and nearby regions. It has a graceful appearance with a pale silvery-white to light yellow body, often marked with fine lines or subtle shading. A distinct dark band runs through the eye, a common feature among butterflyfish, helping to conceal the eye from predators. The fins may show gentle yellow tones, adding a soft contrast to its body. This species typically grows to about 12–15 cm (5–6 inches) and inhabits coral reefs and reef slopes, where it feeds on small invertebrates, coral polyps, and algae. Due to its limited range and infrequent sightings, it remains a relatively uncommon and intriguing species for marine enthusiasts.
