Weaving Light and Structure in Japanese Glass Art | Takeoka Kensuke’s Woven Glass

P
Process Explained

In Toyama Prefecture, glass artist Takeoka Kensuke works with one of the most unpredictable materials in craft. Glass cannot be shaped through direct touch, and its final form remains uncertain until the cooling process is complete. In this video, Takeoka shares the tension, speed, and quiet focus involved in shaping glass, as well as the thoughts behind his collaboration with MUSUBI KILN.

Drawn to materials that develop character over time, such as bamboo and wild grapevine, Takeoka explores how warmth can be expressed through glass, a material that does not age in the same way. Through his woven-glass works and mizusashi water jars, he reflects on texture, light, shadow, and the joy of creating objects that feel good in the hand and bring a small smile to everyday life.
