Hello everyone and welcome back to my channel. My name is Babila Safara, your clinical nutritionist
in medicine. Today we are discussing a topic that has become increasingly popular around the world,
organic food. Many people believe organic food is healthier, safer, and more nutritious than
conventional food. But is that really true? What exactly makes a food organic? And are
higher prices worth it? In today's video we'll explore the facts about organic food in a simple
and easy to understand way. Let's get started. What is organic food? Organic food refers to
food that is produced using natural farming methods. The goal is to work with nature
while reducing the use of synthetic chemicals. Organic farming generally avoids synthetic
pesticides, artificial fertilizers, generally modified organisms, certain veterinary medicines,
irradiation, which is food preserving using radiation. Instead, farming uses more natural
methods to grow crops and raise animals. The aim is to protect human health, animal welfare,
soil quality, water resources, and the environment. What makes a food organic? For a product to be
labeled organic, it must meet strict of production standards. Organic farming focuses on healthy soil,
sustainable farming practices, animal welfare, and environmental protection. Organic products
are carefully monitored and certified before they can carry an organic label. This helps consumers
know that the product meets a specific standard. It meets. Why do people buy organic food? People
choose organic food for different reasons. The most common reasons include, one, health concerns.
Many consumers want to reduce their exposure to pesticides and synthetic chemicals. Two,
environmental protection. Organic farming generally aims to reduce population or pollution
and protect biodiversity. Three, taste and quality. Some people believe organic foods have a better
taste and texture. Four, animal welfare. Organic livestock farming often follows stricter animal
welfare standards. Common organic foods. Some of the most commonly purchased organic foods include
vegetables, fruits, dairy products, eggs, meat, and grains. Many supermarkets now have dedicated
organic sections because demand continues to grow. Does organic food contain additives?
This is something many people don't realize. A common myth is that organic foods contain
absolutely no additives. The truth is that some additives are allowed in organic food production.
However, the number and amount of additives permitted are more restricted than in conventional
food production. These additives must be approved and justified before use. So, organic foods are
not completely additive free, but they are generally containing fewer approved additives.
Is organic food more nutritious? This is one of the biggest questions people ask.
The answer is not completely straightforward. Research shows that organic foods are not
always dramatically more nutritious than in conventional foods. However, some differences
have been observed. Let's look at them. Organic fruits and vegetables. Studies suggest that
organic fruits and vegetables may contain more vitamins, more antioxidants, more plant compounds
called polyphenols. At the same time, they may contain lower levels of pesticides, residues,
cadmium, which is a heavy metal, and nitrates. Antioxidants help protect cells from damage
and support overall health. Organic meat. Research suggests that some organic meat
may contain higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, lower levels of saturated fats. Omega-3
fats are beneficial for health and brain function. Organic milk. Organic milk has shown some
interesting differences. It may contain more omega-3 fatty acids, more antioxidants,
and higher levels of certain vitamins. The differences are often laid to how animals are
raised and why they are fed. Organic eggs. Organic eggs often have a darker yolk colour.
This is usually due to differences in their health diet. However, there is currently
no strong evidence showing measured nutritional advantages over conventional eggs.
Are organic foods healthier? This is where things become more interesting. Although organic foods
may contain some nutritional advantages, scientists have not yet proven that eating foods
that are organic automatically leads to a better lifestyle. At present, there is no clear evidence
showing that organic food significantly reduces the risk of measured chronic diseases, such as
heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer's diseases. More long-term studies are still needed.
Are organic foods safer? Many people assume organic foods are safer. The reality is a little
more complicated. Organic foods generally contain lower levels of certain chemicals residues.
However, conventional foods are also heavily regulated and monitored for safety. Current
evidence suggests that organic foods are safe and conventional foods are also safe. Scientists
have not definitely proven that organic foods are safer than conventional foods. What we do know
is that both can be part of the healthy diet when produced and handled correctly. The advantages
of organic food. Let's summarise some of the potential benefits. Organic foods may offer
lower pesticides exposure, higher antioxidant levels, more omega-3 fats, and in some animal
products, more environmentally friendly farming practices, and greater focus on animal welfare.
Limitations of organic food. It's also important to understand the limitations. Organic food
is often more expensive, does not automatically mean more nutritious, it is not completely
additive-free, has not been proven to prevent major chronic diseases,
is not guaranteed to be safer than conventional food. Should you buy organic food? The answer
depends on the budget, personal values, and preferences. If organic food is available
and affordable, you can certainly be part of the healthy diet. However, if organic products
are too expensive, don't feel discouraged. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes,
whole grains, and healthy proteins remains far more important than whether food is organic
or conventional. A healthy diet is built on good food choices overall. In conclusion,
organic food continues to grow in popularity around the world. It offers certain environmental
and nutritional advantages, particularly higher antioxidant levels and lower pesticides residues.
However, current scientific evidence does not prove that organic foods are dramatically healthier
or safer than conventional food. The most important message is this. Eat more foods
and vegetables. Choose whole, minimally processed food. Focus on balance and variety. Make food
choices that feed your health goals and budget. Because whether food is organic or conventional,
healthy eating habits, they remain the foundation of good health.
