This House Makes You Stop Before You Enter

N
Nature House

The Counter-Slope House faces Lake Memphremagog on a steep site that never stops descending.

Instead of dominating the hillside, the house creates a more subtle response: a horizontal pause within a landscape that constantly falls toward the water.

The roof of the lower level becomes a belvedere terrace, almost a discreet lookout, aligned with the tree canopy and facing the lake. Before entering, the visitor stops, looks at the landscape, and understands the slope.

Inside, the house is experienced through levels, passages, stairs, framed views, cedar, white oak, glass, shadow, forest, and water.

This is not a house trying to erase the terrain.
It accepts the descent.
Creates a counter-slope.
And turns the land itself into the main experience of the architecture.
