What is a polygon? Learning the different shapes is one of the stages that the kids educational journey goes through. Polygon is one of those shapes and with this educational video, we are going to take you through a journey about polygons.

So what is a polygon? A polygon is a flat two dimensional or 2D shape with straight sides that are fully closed. All the sides of a polygon must be joined up and the sides of it must always be straight. Polygons may have any number of sides, it doesn't have a set number or a set shape.

There are also two different types of polygons: the regular polygon and the irregular polygon. The regular polygon is the one which all its sides are of the same length and also at the same angles. The irregular polygon on the other side is the one with the sides or the angles that are of different lengths and sizes, although they still must be straight and joined up.

Teaching the kids about polygons, there are some extra facts which they might need to know about and remember later on. These facts include that a regular quadrilateral actually has a special name which is a square (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4BD3Rv17lo). There is also the fact that there are different types for the triangles: an equilateral triangle which is a regular triangle, a right-angle triangle and an isosceles triangle which are both examples of an irregular triangle or irregular polygons

It is important to remember that all the internal angles of a regular polygon are equal. The size of each of the interior angle of a regular polygon is calculated through this equation: (N - 2) x 180 / N, where N is the number of sides. One example to apply this equation is on a regular pentagon which has five sides, so the equation would be: (5 - 2) x 180 / 5, which will be 3 x 180 = 540, so eventually the answer would be 540/5 = 108.
