The True Story of Tostig Godwinson | King & Conqueror

Tostig Godwinson was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman, Earl of Northumbria, and the brother of King Harold Godwinson. In the Norse Kings' sagas, he is remembered as a clever man and a formidable warrior. In addition, in the writing of an anonymous Latin life of Edward the Confessor, Tostig I described as strong, brave, handsome and graceful & open-handed. Both descriptions of him in Norse and Anglo-saxon sources paint him as a great man and warrior.

Many historians view Tostig’s exile from England as the spark that ignited two of the most pivotal invasions in British history: Harald Hardrada’s Norse assault and William, Duke of Normandy’s, legendary conquest. These events would culminate in the fall of Anglo-Saxon England and unleash a series of brutal and bloody battles.
