Have you ever wondered what happened when Muslim armies pushed deep into Western Europe during the early eighth century and who stood in their way? By the year 732, the armies of the Umayyad Caliphate had crossed the Pyrenees from the Iberian Peninsula and advanced far into what is now France. After decades of expansion across the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain, their forces were now moving into the heart of the Frankish world.

Standing against them was one of the greatest warriors of the early Middle Ages: Charles Martel. Known to history as “The Hammer,” Charles was a formidable commander whose strength, discipline, and military judgement had already made him the dominant figure among the Franks. He was not a king, yet few rulers of his age possessed greater real power. When danger approached, it was Charles who gathered the Frankish armies and prepared to meet it.

His defining moment came at the Battle of Tours in 732, also known as the Battle of Poitiers. There, Charles and his men confronted an Umayyad army led by **Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi**. Charles chose his ground carefully and formed his soldiers into a disciplined defensive force. For days the two armies faced one another before the fighting finally began.

When the Umayyad cavalry attacked, the Frankish soldiers held their formation. Again and again, Charles's men refused to break. During the fierce fighting, Abd al-Rahman was killed, and after nightfall the surviving Umayyad forces withdrew. Charles had won a remarkable victory, and his reputation as one of the most powerful military leaders of his generation was secured.

But Tours was not the end of Charles Martel's struggle against Umayyad power in Gaul. In the years that followed, he continued campaigning in the south, confronting Muslim forces and strengthening Frankish control. A later medieval chronicler would remember his achievements in striking words:

“It was Charles Martel who had crushed the despots who were claiming dominion for themselves throughout the whole land of the Franks. It was he, too, who had conquered the Saracens, when they were striving to occupy Gaul, in two battles, one in Aquitaine, near the city of Poitiers, and the other by the River Berre, near Narbonne. In this way he compelled them to withdraw to Spain.”

Those words capture the reputation Charles would carry through the centuries: a warrior who defeated his rivals at home and confronted powerful enemies from beyond the Frankish frontier. His victories helped secure his authority and established the Franks as the dominant military power in Western Europe.

Over time, the Battle of Tours became much more than a single military victory. Later generations portrayed it as a great confrontation between two expanding worlds, and Charles Martel became celebrated as a defender of Christian Europe. Some historians have questioned the traditional claim that Tours alone determined the fate of the continent, but there is little doubt that the battle became one of the defining moments of Charles's extraordinary career.

And it is from this legacy that Charles Martel earned his legendary place in European history: the Hammer of the Franks and the warrior remembered by generations as the Saviour of Europe. This is his story.
