Haydn’s final set of six string quartets was published in 1799. They were probably composed in 1796–97, two years after his last symphony, No. 104. As Haydn did not complete the famous ‘Emperor’s Hymn’ until the end of January 1797, the so-called ‘Emperor Quartet’ is likely to have been composed only after that. The autograph scores have been lost. The fact that the dedicatee, Count Joseph Erdödy, received them for his exclusive use for a time (which cost him 100 ducats) probably explains the relatively late publication by Artaria.
