New this evening, the Springfield community is remembering a fallen police officer who was killed in the line of duty 14 years ago today.
22 News reporter Sarah Baname joined us live in studio with his legacy.
Christina Sierra, in honor of Officer Kevin Ambrose, Mayor Dominic Sarno wears a particular badge as a reminder to the community of his service and sacrifices by police officers.
On June 4th, 2012, Officer Ambrose was responding to a domestic call at the Lawnton Arms apartment on Lawnton Street.
The lives of both the mother and child were saved, but unfortunately, Officer Ambrose was shot while protecting them from the woman's boyfriend.
He worked for the police department for 36 years.
Mayor Sarno was running the city during that time.
The neighborhoods that he patrolled, they really loved him because he was sort of the old school of the beat cop or community policing on it.
But today marks 14 years.
Kevin would have said, just doing my job.
The outpouring support from the community and officers nationwide during the procession left a lasting impact on Sarno.
The Springfield Police Department even has a memorial outside their headquarters on Pearl Street dedicated to Officer Ambrose.
The city also named the soccer field at Greenleaf Park in his honor to recognize his time as a coach.
