In this video, I explain the difference between hitoe kimono (unlined kimono) and awase kimono (lined kimono), and how kimono change with the seasons in Japan.
At first glance, many Japanese kimono look very similar. However, one of the simplest ways to understand kimono is by checking whether they have an inner lining.
Traditionally in Japan, hitoe kimono are worn in warmer months, while awase kimono are worn in cooler seasons. People often follow seasonal guidelines such as changing kimono styles around June 1st and October 1st.
Today, however, many people choose kimono based on weather, comfort, and personal feeling rather than strict rules.
I also share my outfit — a cotton hitoe kimono in a soft yellow color, perfect for warm weather and the coming summer season.
