But now comes the harder part. The next flight will likely be far more challenging. In many ways, Flight 12 was only the beginning. It opened the door to a new generation of Starship testing. Now SpaceX must prove that the improvements introduced with V3 can consistently work under increasingly demanding conditions. And that means major changes are probably already being planned behind the scenes. Some of those changes will affect the booster. Others will affect the ship itself. Some may even reshape how SpaceX approaches Starship testing over the next several flights. So how could the roadmap change after Flight 12? And what should we expect from Flight 13 and beyond?  The mission wasn't perfect. SpaceX rarely expects perfection from test flights anyway. But it accomplished something equally important. It generated data. Lots of it. And in the world of rocket development, data is worth its weight in liquid oxygen. Maybe even more. Because unlike oxygen, data doesn't occasionally explode. The success of Flight 12 unlocked several future objectives. Most importantly, it appears to have moved SpaceX closer than ever to reaching orbit with Starship V3. According to updates associated with FCC filings, orbital flight remains a major objective. And the results from Flight 12 suggest SpaceX is steadily moving in that direction. If everything goes according to plan, Flight 13 could become the first V3 mission to truly reach orbit. That alone would be a major milestone. After all, reaching orbit is one of the fundamental requirements for any launch system hoping to compete at the highest level. But orbit isn't the only objective still waiting to be completed.

There are several major capabilities SpaceX has yet to fully demonstrate. One of the most important is reliable in-space engine relight. Another is a successful boostback burn sequence under realistic operational conditions. And eventually, all of these capabilities must work together if Starship is going to support missions involving satellite deployment, orbital refueling, lunar operations, and eventually Mars exploration. That means Flight 13 will likely look very different from Flight 12. The mission profile could become far more ambitious. The testing objectives could become more focused. And some previously celebrated milestones may temporarily take a back seat. The biggest example? Booster catches. As exciting as booster catches are, SpaceX may need to pause them for now. If the company wants to fully understand and resolve the issues observed during Flight 12, then Booster 20 could end up being sacrificed in the name of engineering progress.
